About this deal

Kaldnes Moving Bed process, which has been scientifically tried and tested in fish farming and waste water treatment for over 10 years, is now available for fish keepers and is exclusively distributed worldwide by Evolution Aqua. The media is engineered in a wheel shape and is slightly positively bouyant. This allows a small amount of water flow to circulate the media throughout the vessel. This flow is created with your air pump and air stones or diffuser etc. If i had the free choice, i would recommend a combination of japan mats, static plastic stuff and by bypass, a bakki shower. The shape of K+ Filter Media optimises the amount of “quiet zones” within the media where a stable bio-film can develop. Whilst K+Media keeps the integral profile of K1 Media at its core, there is an extra layer of cells and fins around the outside of each piece that enable microscopic organisms such as Rotifers and Vorticella to thrive. This is an additional benefit as competitor media do not have such “quiet zones” that would allow these higher lifeforms of filter feeders to develop. The bacteria and organisms that form within the bio-film ensure the media delivers optimum levels of biological filtration in the moving bed, which has been proven filtration technology for many years in the fishkeeping hobby.

The role of communities other than microbial ones appears to be important in maintaining water quality in both pond and tank — I’m not suggesting these cryptic microfauna can’t live in or on other media (they undoubtedly will), and EA certainly isn’t claiming that — it’s just that it appears to have engineered an environment just right for them to proliferate in quantity with K1 Micro. You don’t need to take EA’s word for it, as I’ve seen some amazing photos of mature K1 Micro as proof, with hordes of motile rotifers and sessile Vorticella protozoans clearly visible. Moving Filter Media

After many years of research, Evolution Aqua have now developed a new media that not only gives class leading surface area, but also overcomes the problem of long maturation times. Not only will the vast 950m2 per m3 protected surface area maintain a bio-film that helps to improve nitrification, water quality and clarity, but K1 Micro can offer many more benefits: Air Pumps & Accessories Air Pump Alarms Air Pump Spares Air Pumps Air Stones & Discs Airline Hose Airline Fittings Manifolds Oxygen Meters & Regulators Rubber Air Diffusers Venturi for Koi Ponds Bottom Drains Aerated Bottom Drains Retro Fit Bottom Drains Standard Bottom Drains

The effectiveness of a biological filter depends on two main factors: the cross-sectional area (or CSA), and the hydraulic loading rate, which is the amount of water moved through the biofilter per unit of cross-sectional area. As a result, the media should be able to remove TANs in water at a high rate. In the end, this will provide cleaner water for your fish. I did have 20kgs of crystal bio mixed in to the bakki but slowly replaced with bhm over time ,experience taught me that k1 or in this case micro k1 , is much better than jap matting, I have a very large, 4 bay multi bay filter, i had 1 with aerated k1, 1 with aerated micro k1 and 2 with aerated jap matting, the filter was very mature. Unlike foam, matting, or other forms of static filtration media, the K1 Media is designed to move freely within your filter. The constant chaotic movement of the air from your pump, causes the media to self clean and thus requires no maintenance. This allows the filter to reach optimum effectiveness without the disturbance of periodic cleaning, avoiding unnecessary loss of bacteria within the filter. 50 Litres of K1 Media will handle up to 250 grams of food per day. K1 Micro Filter MediaSome users of showers say that it reduces nitrate which I think may be true, but it it may not work any better than anything else, for all, as JK above has said, it really depends on your pond system and how the filtration is set up, and I do know people that have changed from a shower to K1, or added a K1 system after first installing a shower. K1 media is a light, small, wheel shaped plastic media that floats easily. It is used in pond filters to trap suspended solids and also to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. These micro-organisms convert toxic ammonia produced by the fish into less toxic nitrate, and ultimately nitrate, through the nitrification process. A key feature of this media is that it has a fantastic protected surface area which greatly aids the development of these bacteria. It allows bacteria to colonise within the filter and, at the same time, prevents the unnecessary loss of bacteria through excessive water movements.

Do not fill solid removal filters more than 80% to allow the bed to be expanded during the cleaning process,

Virgin Plastic: K1, K1 Micro and K+ Medias are all made of virgin plastic (not-recycled) so that you will get the best bacterial adhesion. The K Plus media also has a mineral coating that further enhances colonization of beneficial bacteria. The nitrifying bacteria found in K1 filter media work to break down ammonia to nitrite. These bacteria live in the water, where they consume the nitrite in the water. In addition to nitrite, k1 filter media also aids the biological filtration process by reducing nitrate levels. A small amount of ammoniacal nitrogen can cause the nitrification process to fail, resulting in high nitrite levels in the aquarium. This is why it is important to change aquarium water regularly. They both look the same just one's bigger than the other basically. I only mentioned the volumes in litres for each as those were the ones stated by EA for either K1 or K1 Micro in an Eazy Pod which I thought might help with identification with out the need to measure the actual size of the media. 18 litres is going to be noticeably less than 30 litres. Oase Pond Pads used within a moving bed system provide a maintenance-free, self-cleaning filter medium. The Oase Pond Pads will achieve a neutral floating behaviour after approx. 6-10 week run-in time depending on water temperature and load. While K1 is primarily found in leafy green vegetables, it is also present in some animal products and fermented foods. When used in an aquarium, K1 is more effectively absorbed by the body because it contains a protective surface. K1 also provides habitat for young and mature beneficial bacterial colonies. The media is ideal for purification because it has the capacity to remove excess ammonia, nitrate, and other harmful pollutants. During the extrusion process, Evolution Aqua add a range of minerals, along with magnesium, calcium, enzymes and salt to the raw material that is used to manufacture K+Media. The result means that K+Media will mature much faster than many other types of media.Maturing the K1 micro media bio-media is important because a delicate eco-system is naturally developing for the bacteria involved in the nitrification process. K1 micro media provides the maximum active surface area for the bacteria to colonise, more than other types of static media. It is this process which removes harmful ammonia and nitrite from the water.
