About this deal

We are the holders of the U.K. National Collection of Streptocarpus. We have been awarded many prizes for our plants including 33 Gold Medals from the Chelsea Flower Show. Amazingly blue and white were still the only colours of Cape primroses commercially available until (Andrew) Gavin Brown started his experiments with Streptocarpus at the John Innes Institute in the 1970s. Similarly, if you are experiencing hot weather, be sure that the water you collect from the tap is not even lukewarm. Feeding Use a liquid fertiliser at 3 weekly intervals through spring and summer, just a few drops in the water saucer provides steady access to food.

Though this plant is intolerant of cold and also succumbs to its fair share of pests, it has a singular strength: this delightful wildflower is a regular homebody!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Cape Primrose varieties will flourish when they get warm days and cool nights yet these plants are very sensitive to temperature extremes and cannot tolerate temperatures either around even 5°C or nearing 26°C.

Propagating Streptocarpus can be a simple and enjoyable hobby. It’s very easy to create dozens of baby plants, increasing your collection and creating new plants for gifts. Cut off a large, healthy leaf with a clean razor blade and slice out the central vein, leaving two leaf halves. Plant the halves in rich potting soil by standing them up with the cut side down. When re-potting choose a pot only slightly bigger than the current one, about a thumb's width wider in diameter, or one 'pot size' larger if using old-fashioned clay pots. A wide shallow pot or half-pot is more suitable than a deep pot. Plants can be potted-on if necessary in spring, using a specialist houseplant or multi-purpose compost

Advice on buying streptocarpus

A decade on, the variety was also named the ‘People’s Choice’ for ‘Plant of the Decade’ in this year’s virtual Chelsea awards. There are over 150 accepted species of Streptocarpus that have natural distributions around the southern reaches of Africa (Afrotropical regions), including Madagascar, Zimbabwe and South Africa . Although many people use the term Streptocarpus, another common name used around the world is the 'Cape Primrose' - a nod to many of the native species native town and similar characteristics to the Primula. This is the most significant step; reduce the temperature by around 5℃ compared to the summertime or place in a room that's around 13℃ (55℉). The lowered temperature should ideally begin to increase again at the start of spring, which in turn will stimulate new growth. You'll be at a significant disadvantage if the ambient temperature is kept constant throughout the year, as Streptocarpus will only respond with flowers in year-long fluctuating environments (13℃ (55℉) in winter & 20℃ (66℉)) in the spring and summer). Never exceed the minimum temperature as it could lead to plant death or yellowed foliage at a bare minimum.
