About this deal

But with those omissions aside (and they’re only omissions if they’re features you’d use), the Silva Trail Runner Free H still offers some great features... 5 things you need to know... Integrated power cord

Before we go any further it’s worth mentioning the things that are missing here, just in case they turn out to be deal breakers. Firstly, there’s no night-vision maintaining red light, so if this is something you really want in a headtorch (and ask yourself honestly, how often do you really use it?) the Trail Runner Free isn’t for you. It’s IPX5 rated, meaning it’s robustly water resistant, but not waterproof like some IPX7 rated torches. And finally, it doesn’t have any fancy auto-adjusting wizardry, just three manual power levels and a flashing option. All Trail Runner Free lamps have the power cord integrated into the headband. We call it Free Technology – a comfortable headlamp experience without distracting cords or tangled wires. No hassle – Just free the energy. Some lamps dim by as much as two-thirds in the first five minutes. Others maintain full intensity until their batteries die. Lakota Gambill How We Tested There are many head torches in the market without cords, but up until today, that has always implied batteries integrated into the actual head torches, resulting in uneven weight distribution and unergonomic movement. HYBRID BATTERY CASE: A versatile battery case for either rechargeable or alkaline batteries. Holds an integrated red rear safety light. The two unique selling points of this otherwise much heavier head torch is that: first, it’s completely waterproof; and second, it boasts an innovative swiveling bezel around the lamp, so you can switch from floodlight to spotlight and everything in between – great for personalizing your illumination. Okay, so the Fenix HL60R headlamp may be slightly on the heavy side (178g / 6.3oz) for runners but the specs certainly explain why: this is the most bombproof head torch you’ll ever meet, and it’s fully waterproof down to 2m even with the micro-usb side-port housing open. One for the most gnarly scramblers or extreme butterfingers amongst us then! The Silva Trail Runner Free H is a versatile and capable running-specific headlamp with a powerful, dual beam and a separate battery compartment that uses rechargeable or alkaline batteries. Its cordless design is practical and comfortable, and configuration of the battery compartment offers a variety of setup options for long outings. This is when the headlamp stays on while you charge it – not common as of March 2022, but hopefully it will be one day as it’s a super-useful feature and saves you money on buying a spare rechargeable battery and / or landfill from not using regular batteries. Quality There is even a great swivel bezel on the lamp to give you full control of the flood or spotlight beam. The plastic lamp housing and design aren’t as sleek or stylish and don’t seem quite as durable as some of the others here, but who can argue with this price tag?

Exceed 4R is our most powerful head torch with 2000 lumens (2300 in boost mode) and has a light and rechargeable 3.5 Ah battery. An optimal head torch for trail running and night orienteering where the technical terrain requires a lot of light. The Silva Intelligent Light system, which simultaneously lights up the ground at your feet and also the trail much further ahead, is superb. Out on the trails this translates into less head movement (you don’t need to look up or down to see what’s happening, you can just run like you do during daylight hours) and more confidence, which means lower levels of fatigue, less trips and slips, and better performance. There are three brightness settings (max, medium, minimum), plus a flashing mode, and an innovative short-burst rapid-flash indicator lets you know when you’re on full beam. Unlike some other headlamps, the medium and minimum settings are still bright enough to be useful. The on-off button (also used to toggle between modes), is large and easy to operate, even if you’re wearing gloves. The lamp offers only three brightness settings, and you can’t select different lights (beam/flood). But it has a combination that works well at running speeds—a floodlight hits the ground nearest you while a sharper beam is cast farther ahead. In our tests, it held its max brightness consistently for the first two hours, but fell off a cliff by the end of the third hour; its light was so dim you couldn’t find your way out of the woods on a moonless night. Another really cool feature is the ability to toggle a rear red light for road running. Inside the battery case, a switch can be set to off, on, or blink.Trail Runner Free Ultra is a comfortable and lightweight headlamp for everyone who loves running. Its features and light beam are optimized for a runner’s needs. Trail Runner Free Ultra comes with a rechargeable 4.0 Ah (14.8 Wh) battery as well as the Hybrid battery case. The BioLite Headlamp 750 also has solid ethical credentials, with the company using its profits to help families living in energy poverty across India and Africa. Another point firmly in its favour

The battery charge lasts about two hours on the 400lm setting. To make the charge last longer, I’d need to reduce the beam brightness. That middle light level lasts an impressive five hours and the rechargeable lithium battery makes sure it doesn’t gradually fade out, but should you need to recharge it you can swap in three AAA’s, which is nice and versatile. The 30 lumen minimum is good for 18 hours in an emergency or reading in your tent. Trail Runner Free H is a comfortable and lightweight headlamp for everyone who loves running. Its features and light beam are optimized for a runner’s needs. Free H comes with a rechargeable Hybrid battery (1.25 Ah) and the Hybrid battery case. Trail Runner Free has a brightness of 400 lumens which with the smart light image provide plenty of light during your running session. You will both see where you put your feet and get strong lighting in the distance. If you run in technical terrain and need even more light, our multi-torches are a good choice. Choose between the powerful Exceed 4R with 2000 lumens, Trail Speed 5R with 1200 lumens or Cross Trail 7R with 600 lumens. You can buy more head torch accessories for the multi-torches and use them for other sports such as cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, mountain biking, biking and mountaineering.
