There are oodles of detail: from the steady thrum of the basslines on Massive Attack’s Angel to the wispy vocals of The Unthanks. As written few posts up here, the EQ used is the Equalizer APO software with PEACE user interface plugin. I have made a small adjustments shown on the screenshot and as the result they are better sounding / a bit brighter now.Meze and their Meze 99 Classics is a good example, that headphone being properly supported by the company. As interesting as the other details may be, the whole construction just doesn’t make sense at times when the listener feels uncomfortable or overweight when using the headphones.

The treble has excellent extension, but it can be a bit hot at times, especially in the upper midrange / lower treble, where most of the energy lies. There is a 50mm Denon Free Edge Driver within the new headphones to enable pure piston motion for what the company says will deliver superior sound, and the wood is also said to enhance the sound quality.If you’re not plugging them into your hi-fi system, you’ll need at least a good quality DAC like the Chord Mojo when listening to laptop-based music to really hear them at their best. Based on my ears and quite a lot of tweaking / experimenting, I have improved the EQ settings a bit further (version 2 attached).

Otherwise, recessed frequency bands are pretty noticeable aside from some prominent vocal ranges which cut through a lot more clearly. The closedback design greatly reduces the amount of sound that leaks into your immediate area, The AHD7200 has a wellbalanced, detailed sonic signature with impressive transient response and imaging, The headphones have a very nice look and feel. it plays extremely warm, voluminous and mild, but does not share the typical shortcomings of similarly lubricated "melting products", but has no noticeable weaknesses in terms of pulse fidelity, dynamics, transparency and purity across the frequency spectrum. The wooden earcups come with extremely comfortable memory-foam earpads covered in soft artificial leather. I actually had to disassemble the headphones, because one of my ears developed an issue where it seemed like it was quieter.The earpads are also at the limit between being over-the-ear and on-ear for my ears, and getting a proper seal can be difficult at times. In addition, the driver loading (cups, Onken ports, damping) is different than in all Fostex/Massdrop headphone models. My old Denon D5000 headphones were always my benchmark for comfort, matched only by the Beyerdynamic DT1990 and the Sennheiser HD800. These are the most colored frequencies within the D7200’s timbre, as they move around the mix with more air and height compared to the rest of the frequency response.
