About this deal

Caffeine can be found in the leaves, seeds and fruit of a number of plants, notably coffee and tea, but also guayusa, yerba mate and guarana. Nature always has its reasons. The connection between caffeine and the adrenal glands is that it often over-stimulates them, which leads to further fatigue. In science-speak, this is called supercritical fluid extraction. Basically, the process starts with the beans being immersed in carbon dioxide (same gas as in sparkling water) for around 10 hours. Robusta needs more caffeine to fend off the multitude of insects at sea level. A fascinating demonstration of evolution in action! In environmental terms, the CO2 used is in a permanent cycle, rather than vented to atmosphere – there will be some further off-gassing when the beans are removed from the system (no process being perfect), but for the most part, it’s a closed system, which is good news for the environment. Methylene Chloride Decaf Process (MCP)

All participants in the study were described as moderate coffee drinkers consuming between three and six cups per day (300 to 600mg/day caffeine). This is for historical reasons: decaf coffee was traditionally produced by using chemical solvents and the result was weak, insipid or bitter coffee. As a result of this, decaf coffee was commoditised into a low quality coffee “product”. This was a small study, however, and more research needs to be done on the effects of caffeine on hydration and sodium levels of the body. But, it does muddy the waters of the old traditional view that caffeine is a diuretic.Susan Castle is the Director of Marketing, Strategy & Development at The Bean Alliance, which sells Swiss Water decaf coffee under the brand Bean Ground & Drunk in large Australian supermarket chains (including Woolworths and Coles) as well as small specialty stores. As she tells us, their single origin organic and Fairtrade decaf coffee “is in every supermarket store in Australia”. Swiss Water Process : This a very clever process and involves no chemicals. Basically a batch of beans is soaked in hot water to dissolve the caffeine. This process will also cause some essential oils and flavour molecules to also dissolve. Read more here The prime reason behind this is the solvents used to decaf the beans for some decaffeination processes. As another company that is committed to ‘building a more sustainable, responsible industry’ they have numerous targets to reduce their environmental impact as well as committing to the Selecta Coffee Fund, which provides investment into coffee-growing communities. Decaf coffee still contains high levels of anti-oxidants that can prevent conditions associated with the ageing process and cancer. Studies have shown that regular decaf drinkers have reduced risks of incurring colon cancer. For female drinkers, the risks of breast cancer are also reduced.

Chinese factories together exporting 4 million kg of caffeine alone to the USA every year. Indeed, the majority of the world’s synthetic caffeine comes from just one Chinese town: Shijiazhung – a heavily polluted industrial city in Hebei province. Café owners and roasters, you can’t afford to not market your decaf coffee. According to the 2017 NCA Coffee Drinking Trends, 10–14% of US Americans have drunk decaf in the last day (depending on ethnicity). And the majority of those are millennials and younger drinkers – the same ones who, the study finds, are drinking the most “gourmet” or specialty coffee. In both patients, temporary excessive coffee consumption led to increased seizure frequency, and withdrawal of coffee from the diet resulted in a return to the previous status.” The FODMAP diet is a complex diet plan, so it’s important that you receive good quality advice about how to do the FODMAP diet properly – preferably from a registered dietician.Indeed, if you have celiac disease or gluten intolerance, you should explore the possibility that coffee is one of the most common cross-reactive foods to gluten. This is another decaf coffee that is available in a 1kg bag, so again, do make sure that you have a suitable place to store the beans in a suitable place to ensure they stay fresh for as long as possible.
