About this deal

Running the Geekbench 5 CPU multi-core test, the Pixel 7 scored 3,309 to the Pixel 6’s 2,843: a generational improvement of around 16%. This score puts it within reaching distance of the Galaxy S22’s Exynos 2200 but the Pixel is still a long way behind the year-old A15 Bionic inside this year’s iPhone 14. The single-core result, meanwhile, is practically identical to the previous version. Most people will love the smoothness and fluidity of its 90Hz refresh rate, and the implementation of the always-on display is far better here than it is on the more expensive Apple iPhone 14 Pro. Another choice from OtterBox, this defender series case is a must-have for those desiring the ultimate level of protection, assuming you aren't put off by the extortionately high price. Tested and approved to withstand 4 times as many drops as the official military standard, you can rest assured that your new Google Pixel 7 Pro will be protected to the extreme with this case. You'll get a little over a day of battery out of the 7 Pro – though with heavier use plus the refresh rate and display resolution maxed out it's likely to be a bit less. We got ourselves into a routine of charging the phone (and the Pixel Watch) every night without issues. We could unfortunately see very distorted edges around some objects in our test clips. This could be fixed by Google magic in a software update, but that's yet to happen at the time of writing this update in May 2023. Pixel 7 Pro: Software

The brightness on the responsive OLED screen has increased by more than 20% from the 6 Pro, and during months of use, we've never had issues with using the smartphone in sunny or glare-heavy weather. There is a slight difference in the ultra-wide setup. The 12MP ultra-wide camera on the Pixel 7 Pro has a wider 125-degree lens, while the Pixel 7 equivalent has a narrower 106-degree field of view, the Pro's also boasts autofocus for the first time, enabling a new Macro Focus mode. This is a tiny bit worrying. After all, last year’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro both offered only average battery life at best. Once again, Google is giving you a striking horizontal camera strip, which completely bisects a glossy glass rear. The differences this time lie in the finer details. There’s nothing as fancy as the iPhone 14’s new Dynamic Island, but there’s no big notch, either. We're frequently impressed with how effective the camera system is for day-to-day use, in any type of lighting.

Still, we love that the feature is built into Google Photos, so any photos saved in the gallery can be unblurred, even if they were taken on an older phone from your unruly university nights out. Hopefully, this will improve with some software updates in the future. Google Pixel 7 battery life and processor Most of the heavy lifting is done by the Android 13 software paired with the Tensor G2 chip, which you won’t find if you break open the earlier models, with the exception of the 7a. Both phones have a clear visual identity with an edge-to-edge "camera bar" on the rear. On the new model, this has changed texture, now in matte aluminium. It looks sleek and classy, although we're aware this design has its detractors and, yes, it won't sit flat on the desk without a case.Apart from the smart case and SmartBlade, you can also add a screen protector (sold separately). The screen protector is of the highest quality, easy to apply, and will protect the display from various damage. And with new and improved displays from the Pixel 7 series, you might want to consider it.

Fans of smaller handsets may not love the larger physical size of the Pixel 7 Pro, which can be tough to use comfortably without stretching your fingers across the screen. If so we recommend the recently-released Samsung S23 or the iPhone 13 mini.Other features include 10-bit HDR, improved stabilization, and what Google calls ‘Speech enhancement’, which enables you to choose which audio to focus on in videos. With a few exceptions, like speedier Night Sight photography, whether they bring sufficient improvements in the areas that kept the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro off the top of the pile falls more to personal opinion than anything but they certainly offer more than the predecessors on paper, even if it remains in a 'distinctly Pixel way'. There are some changes that are almost imperceptible unless you're holding the 6 and 7 side-by-side. The new one is a tiny bit smaller with a 6.3-inch (rather than a 6.4-inch) display, and it's a little lighter than its predecessor too. And even though it's affordable for a flagship, anyone on a budget should probably be looking at the cheaper Pixel 7a instead. Google Pixel 7 Pro verdict We've tried and tested these super thin cases from totallee before on the latest iPhone 14 Pro, and honestly, we were super surprised at just how thin these cases actually are! Whether that's a positive or negative aspect of these cases remains to be determined. With absolutely no bulk to the case, and depending on your own personal preferences, these offerings from totallee could be the next best thing on the market, or the least-protective case you could buy, essentially made from air.

We got ourselves into a nice routine of charging the phone and watch every night and accepted that the dream of a two-day battery wasn’t one that would come true. While the stats show that Google's handsets still make up only a small portion of all the smartphones out there in the wild, that number is growing faster than other brands and we can report that we've spotted an increasing amount of Pixel devices in the hands of our fellow commuters (it helps that the camera bar makes them distinctive!). Google says the ultrawide pictures on the selfie camera are “improved” but doesn’t really go into much detail about what that means and in my tests the 10.8MP images looked the same as they did last year. Color/design options: Some brands only offer one or two color choices, but the fashion-forward ones take more chances in this department, adding blended colors, textured designs and customized skins to the mix.

Google Pixel 7 tips and tricks

Google isn't reinventing the wheel with the Pixel 7. It's a polished and refined upgrade to 2021's Pixel 6. The good news is that we already highly recommend that variant and its cheaper sibling, the Pixel 6a, and that remains the case when it comes to the newest model, and its new affordable companion, the Pixel 7a. The company did mention that all cameras can now record at up to 4K resolution at 60fps, and this makes a huge difference to video quality, especially if you often record using the selfie camera. A new feature called Dual allows you to record video on both the front and rear cameras simultaneously, too. There’s been little change from the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on the camera front, at least where hardware is concerned. After testing it out for over six months, we still think the new Pixel 7 is the best Android smartphone for most people, especially if you don't need the bigger display, slightly better battery and more advanced cameras of the Pixel 7 Pro. This case is like no other – not only does it protect and juice up the battery but also adds more features to your phone. We shall go one features at the time.
