About this deal

The signal goes into the next opamp stage where it meets the tone control which actually boosts the highs as well as rolls off the highs (as mentioned in the last paragraph). R9 here helps to set the gain along with the tone control itself while C6 rolls off even more highs. In this first video, I am comparing my Analogman modded TS9 Tube Screamer with the SD-1 using a Fender Stratocaster. I use various amount of gain and show at the end how it can be used to boost an amp, and a distortion pedal (a Proco RAT 2): Nominal Input Level -20 dBu Input Impedance 1 M ohm Nominal Output Level -20 dBu Output Impedance 1 k ohm Recommended Load Impedance 10 k ohms or greater Bypass Buffered bypass Controls DRIVE knob

After introducing the Xotic BB Preamp as a possible alternative to the ubiquitous Ibanez Tube Screamer, I will now leave the expansive boutique route and go for a cheaper model: the BOSS SD-1. As with my previous post, I have made a video to illustrate my point (see the end of this post). The BOSS SD-1 - Photo by Pia Jane Bijkerk Science and technology aside, the SD-1 just sounds pretty damn good paired with a wide variety of amps, including various Marshalls (an SD-1 and JCM800 is a famous combo), Fenders, Voxes and even the latest boutique models. Overdrive and distortion are unique sounds that can be confused. Gain an increased awareness of the differences between the two terms. Read more… What’s the Difference Between a DS-1, SD-1, and BD-2? Read more… Pedal Partners: Combining Overdrive with Other Effects It was my first overdrive pedal when I was about 13 years old and that was it,” Dan tells us. “It was the ultimate overdrive sound right away for me and I will always have one on my board. It’s been on every album we’ve ever recorded – Love Is Only A Feeling was an SD-1 and a BOSS compressor a Space Echo – and it’s quite unusual for me to play lots of lead guitar on a Darkness song. I don’t know what it is about the SD-1 but it’s just got vibes. They nailed it didn’t they?”

The DL-1 Delay is a clone of the BOSS DM-2. There’s no brand name for this clone, either, so it’s another case of “did they feel slightly bad about copying BOSS, or did the label maker just break before they could put their company name on the pedal?” We may never know. We do know this pedal was made in Korea, probably in the same facility that manufactured the nameless SD-1 clone that we mentioned above. There's another SoundTank clone by a company called POS, which I think stands for Piece of Shame. Either that or Penguins on Sabbatical. Or maybe Periodically Observant Soothsayers. Honestly, I could do this all day, but we have to finish the article at some point. The signal comes in and passes through R1 and C1 (input cap) and passes a resistor to 4.5v (R2) which is the bias for the transistor (Q5) being used for an input buffer. AC adaptor (PSA series: sold separately) Current Draw 10 mA Expected battery life under continuous use Carbon: Approx. 60 hours

BOSS - SD-1 | SUPER OverDrive

That said, it does its job. It sounds exactly like the Arion SCH-1. I can’t really fault them for that. Next is a shameless clone from the Ukraine. I’m talking about the Sound JS Stereo Chorus CE-5, which is supposed to be a clone of the BOSS CE-5, but is actually closer to the BOSS CE-2. I’ve applauded a few different clones on this list as nearly perfect, but I’ll be the first to admit that the Sound JS Stereo Chorus CE-5 is not one of them. Reliability really can be affordable to all.Boss are so suretheir compact pedals last the test of time, they cover them with a full five year warranty. Key FeaturesThe SD-1 was BOSS’s second overdrive pedal design, and added a tone control to the original OD-1 Overdrive – while the jury is still out as to whether that was the only tweak to the circuit, as the two pedals have very different personalities. Nevertheless, it was the SD-1 that proved to be the bigger hit. The Boss SD-1 is a very good sounding overdrive, economically priced and is one of the most famous tubescreamer type circuits available. Many boutique pedal builders have used this type of circuitry to 'design' their own pedals complete with new fancy paint job and the assumption that their version is better. While it does perform exceptionally well on it's own, we can do different changes to make it better, even making it into something that would rival some of the best boutique overdrive pedals available.
