The Razer Barracuda X isn't the fanciest or most luxurious-feeling gaming headset, but it's one of the most inexpensive and flexible in terms of delivering high-quality audio. The 2022 model uses a nearly identical USB-C transmitter to its predecessor that lets it work with any PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4/5, or Android phone with a USB-C port (Xbox isn't supported), and has the same 3.5mm wireless connectivity. Razer added a big feature to this version, though: Bluetooth connectivity. You can pair it with your phone (or Nintendo Switch, since Nintendo added Bluetooth audio) and listen to music without the transmitter, making it work as a standalone pair of wireless headphones. With a great build and comfort these cans are ideal for long hours of gaming. They are also perfect for critical listening with a well-balanced sound profile that delivers adequate warmth and boom without muddying the sharp highs. That impressive battery life is, of course, a best-case scenario. A lot of that has to do with the volume you're running the headset at, and volume is probably my only real complaint. It's absolutely loud enough but I can listen to it at full volume and still be fairly comfortable.

Each headset that we test we use as our daily drivers for at least a week, that way we get to experience not just the sound, but what it's like to use each set of cans on a daily basis. Even our absolute favourite gaming headsets fail to go toe-to-toe with an ok quality desktop microphone. Audio Technica's new ATH-M50xSTS StreamSet headset says hell no to that, spend all that money on me instead.

Edit 2 - I ahev tried both, DTS X does sound good but to me sounds a little over processed in COD MW and maybe a bit 'echoey'. This was using balanced instead of spacious and my K702 headphones manually chosen. But just because the surround sound you hear on a gaming headset is fake, doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy it or doubt its ability to create an immersive environment. Don't judge me, but I've lost my fair share of headset microphones in my career, but I'm not a huge fan of leaving the mic in front of my face all day when it's not in use. A flip-up mic is a much better option, so glad to see one make the cut with the HS55. Next Xbox appears to have notch better hardware than PS5, but PS5's audio side pretty much makes me wish that it would get market control. Now what is interesting is that DTS Sound Unbound have profile for several hundred headphones. And there was a profile for my cans. And because of this, IMO, is why I don't miss having option to fine tune sound settings like in Dolby Access.DTS maintains a database of 500+ headphones with custom tunings to optimize the listening experience, preserving accurate sound externalization and precise localization of audio objects. That's more like convenient excuse for them being just lazy/going for Microsoft's crap PC game audio ideology. Connectivity: The best wireless gaming headsets offer a 2.4GHz dongle that’ll slot into your PC or gaming console, delivering a latency-free connection to ensure you never miss audio cues in a game. Beyond the dongle, you’ll also often get Bluetooth to listen on other devices, and many offer a wired lag-free connection, too. As for wireless headphones, you’re usually just limited to Bluetooth, and there’s always a bit of latency that comes with it, which could make or break you in a gaming setting. However, some higher-end headphones do offer a wired connection to devices, making lag less of an issue, but you’ll be tethered to the device.

All of that flexibility doesn't matter if it feels or sounds bad, and fortunately the Barracuda X punches above its weight class in those categories. It's light and comfortable, with excellent audio performance and a clear, detachable mic. The new headset adds 7.1-channel simulated surround sound for PC use, but it isn't quite as accurate as the THX Spatial Audio found in higher-end Razer headsets. That said, it's a nice upgrade over the stereo-only first Barracuda X. Who It's For Not to complicate things, but I've also noticed that in the Windows Store there is now a DTS Sound Unbound app for Windows 10 that seems to do something similar to Dolby Atmos for Headphones (with the same game list). Freely positional "audio objects" including sound formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X would definitely help to current state. Gaming audio is critical for playing at your best. Gaming headsets and speakers from Logitech G deliver immersive surround sound, crystal-clear mics for voice/chat communication, and customizable EQ to acoustically tune for the best sound. Many gaming headsets and sound cards come with a “virtual surround” feature, which aims to provide a more accurate sense of space to your gaming audio. If you’re on the fence about whether the feature is worthwhile, though, there are virtual surround apps that will add the feature to your current headphones, for free or a small price.

The Beyerdynamic MMX 100 is as close to perfection as a wired gaming headset can get thanks to its impressive sound, comfort, and build quality. Freely posiotionable "audio objects" including sound formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X would definitely help to current state. The X is a worthy addition to the Kraken range, and it impresses with that virtual 7.1 surround sound and low price. However, it drops the ball with a non-detachable mic. Extra time and money are often spent on adding wireless functionality to headsets. That means you may sacrifice sound quality and features on cheaper wireless offerings. Budget wired headsets often don’t fall victim to those same problems. Frequency response is another important spec, and it's the range of frequencies the headset can reproduce. On the low-end, most gaming headsets hit a minimum of 20Hz and a maximum of 20,000Hz. As you go from the bottom of the range to the top, sounds go from a low thud to a warm, steady hum and finally a piercing screech.

This headset/mic combination doesn't disappoint on either spec, delivering amazing sound quality and recording that'll see your desktop mic gathering dust.
