About this deal

This movie really deserves more attention than what it has received, and fortunately Disney gave this movie a solid DVD treatment. An Academy Award winner for Best Visual Effects, BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS is a spellbinding mix of live action and animation that makes it one of Disney’s most endearing classics. Disappointingly, this featurette runs barely half as long as it did on Bedknobs' original DVD (20:40).

Note that the 25th Anniversary Special Edition was only released on US NTSC Laserdisc and UK PAL VHS- this same extended version was later released on DVD under the 30th Anniversary Edition banner- though the content is the same, I've arbitrarily highlighted both the original 25th Anniversary Special Edition and the 30th Anniversary Edition. Weighill had previously dropped out of school and began his acting career in an uncredited role as a schoolboy in David Copperfield (1969). Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times awarded the film two-and-a-half stars out of four, claiming that, while the film has the "same technical skill and professional polish" as Mary Poppins, "[i]t doesn't have much of a heart, though, and toward the end you wonder why the Poppins team thought kids would like it much. The Walt Disney Home Video's children's trailer from 1986 with clips of "Mary Poppins", "The Love Bug", "Pete's Dragon", "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", "The Disney Bunch" and "Mickey's Christmas Carol".The original production, which was directed by Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison, opened at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle, in August 2021 and is currently touring the UK and Ireland. During the early 1960s, Bedknobs and Broomsticks entered development when the negotiations for the film rights to Mary Poppins (1964) were placed on hold. During the meantime, Disney instructed Robert and Richard Sherman to begin development on the project. Herbie Videos trailer from 1995 "Herbie Goes Bananas", "Herbie Rides Again", "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo" and "The Love Bug". Though far from their best Disney output, the Shermans' songs (some of their last for a Disney feature film) hit plenty of right notes.

Lastly, there are four very long theatrical trailers for Bedknobs and 2 classic Disney shorts which really have no relation to the movie itself -- "The Vanishing Private" starring Donald Duck, and Mickey Mouse in "The Worm Turns" -- other than the fact they accompanied the movie in one of its theatrical releases. The Sneak Peeks menu adds promos for Up, Like Stars on Earth, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, Disney Blu-ray, Disney Movie Rewards, and D23.As has been true of most of this year's Disney reissues, comparisons revealed no difference in picture and sound between this DVD and the previous one. If you don't care much about bonus features (or put more value upon a cardboard sleeve), then this edition will do just fine as a way of owning the film. I've tracked down each version of Bedknobs and Broomsticks and where to get them in the US and UK if possible. The children soon find themselves aboard a flying bed, its magic brass bed knob their ticket to one fantastic adventure after another – including a visit to an island inhabited by wondrous animated animals! In fact, only a rather drawn-out musical number set in Portobello Road mars the film's perfection, but with so much else to enjoy, that can easily be forgiven.

Most of the deleted film material was found, but some segments of "Portobello Road" had to be reconstructed from work prints with digital re-coloration to match the film quality of the main content. In addition, though the Musical Masterpiece Edition US Region 1 NTSC DVD and the Special Edition UK Region 2 PAL DVD have similar packaging design, the US one contains the extended cut and the UK one contains the theatrical cut and is the only place to find that version on DVD. The first three are clearly a product of a time when showing endless clips from a movie was considered promotion and when you could actually hear the phrase "three homeless Cockney waifs" as a selling point. I think the scene (save for the audio/song itself) is lost forever and is not on any edition, except as just a deleted song. While Eglantine and company are off on exciting journeys, opposition develops in the form of a bookman (Sam Jaffe) looking for the same elusive spell and a priest (Roddy McDowall, underused) wanting to acquire Eglantine's land.He tells her he ended the course early because the final lesson, which he had taken from an old book, was missing. I'd love to know as well as the Golden Collection/30th Anniversary Edition has a running time of 139 mins.
