About this deal

It has a 6 mm drop which makes it more of a midfoot/forefoot striker trainer than a heel striker trainer because it encourages you to strike further forward- this makes it a great shoe for short tempo or workout runs if you prefer a plateless trainer for speedwork. I find the flexible forefoot of the Rebel v3 a little too relaxed; I crave something stiffer with a plate for speedwork. In terms of stability, however, it leaves you wanting. Although the relatively wide platform compensates somewhat, it is still not for those runners who prefer a stable and well supported shoe. For comparison, it’s no worse than its plated cousin, the previously mentioned FuelCell TC, and perhaps a hint more stable than a competitor like the Asics Novablast. With the Rebel v2, the company is looking to fine tune the recipe from the original by applying what they’ve learned since. The changes are plenty, and the upgrade is nothing short of a success. What’s New With the Rebel v2?

FuelCell Rebel v3 Review (2022): Lightest Trainer? New Balance FuelCell Rebel v3 Review (2022): Lightest Trainer?

Just like the first version, the Rebel V2 is an excellent running shoe for forefoot strikers. There’s plenty of deep cushioning to tap into, and the wide midsole provides a reliable foundation to land and launch from. The tongue is flat, wide and not gusseted. There is some downward tongue slide during runs but no lateral tongue slide. It has small holes punched into it to increase air flow and cool your foot down. The fit is on the narrow side but I think most runners will be able to wear the standard D width without any problems. The super critical, nitrogen infused FuelCell provides really good energy return and makes it feel like a super foam. It’s not as bouncy as ZoomX but more bouncy than Hyper Burst, DNA Flash and Pwrrun PB.

New Balance continues to deliver with an update to their lightweight performance trainer the Rebel. The FuelCell Rebel v2 features the highly cushioned and responsive FuelCell midsole with an update to the upper. It's is a highly versatile shoe that can dabble in faster efforts, daily efforts, and easy days. The shoe is a Swiss army knife that has gained a lot of traction in the shoe world, but is it worth the hype? Find out below. The upper clearly is airy and far less dense than the TC or RC. As a heel striker at slower paces I feared the soft soft foam would be overly soft, out of control, or bottom out so I initially didn’t request a sample but hearing early comments from the team had to try them! I was not disappointed! The Nike Mayfly was designed to be the original disposable running shoe. Named after the Mayfly – an insect that lives its full life in 24 hours – the Nike shoe was supposed to last a marathon and self-destruct. Or at least, that was the idea. Nike is always good at story telling. So where do we see the Fuelcell Rebel V2 fit into a shoe rotation? Can this be the one shoe to do it all? It certainly has the potential, so its fragile build quality is disappointing.

The geometry underfoot is very similar to the RC Elite’s with the only difference I can see a slightly (2-3mm) broader midfoot and forefoot width likely to account for no stabilizing plate.

However, the extra foam in the midsole has certainly improved matters on this front. I did a hard hour in the shoe running around 16km and the midsole felt just as bouncy throughout. Although it’s definitely better than the v2, for runs over 25km I would want more cushioning than the Rebel v3 offers. This is due to the lateral “wing” which flares out at the midfoot and forefoot and pushes your foot inward. This “wing” is not as prominent as on the Rebel V1 but it still results in medial side lean bias.Ryan/Jacob/Sam/Michael: Highly flexible midsole doesn't provide much stability, and limits toe-off power Peter: Well covered above. I agree that it is very soft and very bouncy and that, without a plate (as in the TC) it can be a little inconsistent, unstable and unruly. Generally speaking the midsole is amazing and with a little bit of tuning/taming it could be perfect. The entire forefoot is covered with soft, flexible rubber. The forefoot rubber extends down into the midfoot on the lateral side.

I guess one suggestion would be if you are a pronator, the midsole is a bit soft and can angle inward a bit. Imma keep going, so T Swizz, take a seat. The upper fits so well that when you drop the hammer in a workout, it seamlessly moves with you in total comfort. I wasn’t a fan of the odd-shaped tongue at first, but by the time I am writing this, I have come to appreciate the way it fits into the form. The heel counter is gentle on the heel/Achilles while it holds the rear of your foot securely in.

We’ve already touched in on the FuelCell foam, and its varying properties across New Balance’s full range of performance shoes. But it bears repeating that FuelCell in one running shoe does not necessarily equal FuelCell in another. Speaking to RoadTrailRun, they company state: Personal: A (Really lightweight, protective, bouncy, and responsive. This is a shoe I really like doing strides in, road workouts, long runs, etc.) Even the outsole coverage was mostly limited to the forefoot, and only a tiny slab of rubber covered the heel. MEAGHAN: The New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2 is a fun shoe. From aesthetics to performance, it’s got a lot of good stuff going on.
