About this deal

Nose: Quite herbaceous. Green fruit, mint, cucumber, pine, grassy, spearmint. Just loads of green fruit in this one.

Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise. Way more expressive nose than the Distiller’s Reserve. Fruity and slightly spicy. Orange, pineapple, apricot and peach, maybe pear as well. It’s also flagrant almost like perfume. Cinnamon, honey, gentle oak, hints of smoke and sandalwood. Palate: Slightly drying again on the finish. All those flavours from the palate seem to stay, the mizunara is here, the plums, the incense, the raisin and sultanas, the oak, the spices, everything. Lingering on and on and on. And on. And one last on. For the road. Comments: But what I love most is the air of intrigue and minimalistic sophistication Japanese whiskies bring with them. There is nothing which is too much or unnecessary. Nothing is loud or overbearing. Instead there is a controlled elegance to everything they represent. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819.The whisky industry is booming with NAS products (non age statement) so two of Suntory’s malt distilleries, Yamazaki and Hakushu decided to jump on the NAS wagon by releasing Distiller’s Reserve whiskies without age statement. Released in the spring of 2014, I finally got my hands on Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve. Well, I can’t say I was too keen on trying out another new NAS whisky release by a big whisky distillery, but then again, they make great drams in Japan. This can’t be below average, can it? I have to use Flushed Away as the reference, because it’s a good movie, but like the title says: there’s little bit of that going down the gutter feel, when releasing an incomplete NAS whisky. Feels like Yamazaki was in a hurry, trying to get its share from the NAS market. Flushed Away suits well for reference also because of the fact that Rita’s boat was named the Jammy Dodger. This whisky does have some nice jammy notes. Should I say “Running down the gutter with a piece of bread and jam butter”?

The tasting experience of the Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve begins with a fruity nose, where notes of papaya blend harmoniously with hints of cinnamon, sandalwood, and cherry cola. Nose: Soft nose with a sweetness underlying the fruitiness. Kirsch cherries, summer berries & sherry. There is a dusty honeyed note with sweet vanilla. It's a lovely welcoming nose that you are happy to spend a bit of time with. Not overly complex but wonderful and mysterious. There is a sweet oak note which is the mizunara and offers a fragrant and slightly spiced note. A blend of diverse single malts that have aged in casks of American oak, Mizunara, sherry oak, and Bordeaux casks. These experiences have honed my palate and provided me with a profound understanding of the vast world of spirits.

While the Yamazaki Distillers Reserve may not be the best Yamazaki I have tasted it is quite decent in it's own right. Chocolate, grapefruit, a bit of passion fruit and cedar wood, medium length, slightly drying (less than the Distiller’s Reserve) Comments: For those seeking a more affordable option that still captures the essence of Yamazaki, the Distiller’s Reserve serves as a commendable alternative.

Since that day I have tried Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve four times. The second time from a 200mL bottle and the following two times from a 700ml bottle. This review is based on my tasting from the fourth tasting. Comments: Mizunara casks are quite unique. When asked what characters come through from this type of Japanese oak, Shinji merely said that Mizunara smells of Mizunara! He did then develop on this, commenting that it smells of temples. He had a good point – those aromas of incense, spices and aromatic smokiness all suddenly fell into place and made sense. Taste: The sherry influence is clear with it’s predominantly dark fruit notes. It also had a great, viscous mouthfeel for the proof. Shinji, the fourth Chief Blender for Suntory since they started making whisky, was joined by writer Dave Broom to present the evening. Dave has spent quite a bit of time out in Japan over the years and was asked to come over to Tokyo two years ago to assist in the home launch of these whiskies – it’s quite the challenge being a Scotsman in Japan, teaching locals about Japanese whisky! Two years on he joined us to do the same in London. Taste: Delicate with blossoms, incense and cedar wood. Red fruits, honey and cinnamon. Somewhat tannic, which no doubt derives from the wine casks.
