About this deal

The book clearly used discrimination toward vampires as an allegory for real-world discrimination such as that against lesbians. In this book, vampires are born as vampires, not “turned”. But, the effort for vampires to “fit in” and be more accepted by humans by eliminating their need for any form of human or animal blood disturbed me somewhat. Vampires don’t seek to be accepted for what they are, they seek to alter part of their very nature rather than reduce unfair discrimination by humans. It reeks a bit of gay conversion therapy, and I didn’t like that.

It had to be something bad for Marcus to lose his cool, unless he was hungry again. April looked at Seth with pleading eyes, and he walked over to them slowly. We're told what people are thinking at certain times and about certain situations, when the author couldn't possibly know what any of these people thought because he didn't interview anyone. I had a rant all ready to go, but I think it's best just to part ways peacefully. It's not me, it's you, etc. Loved it! Loved Sebastian, totally fell in love, he is like the perfect vampire. I liked that he was different from what I normally read with vampires, they are usually warriors and bad and tough but Sebastian is none of that, he is kind and gentle and nice. Now don't get me wrong, he was very strong and very protective of Jane. I loved that he wanted what was best for her, everything he did he did for Jane. The Vampire Next Door” MCs are both likeable. Courtney is the human, and Lare is the vampire. Courtney is dealing with serial infidelity by her four-month long partner Mia, and despite her own insta-attraction for Lare, she will not cheat on Mia with even a kiss. She annoyed me only twice: once when she continued to think she was in a relationship with Mia even after Mia clearly said “we’re done”, and secondly when she took so long to figure out the pretty transparent mystery and what her own role was to be. Overall, though, she was likable, loyal and sweet. Lare was mysterious and hot, and this is the first vampire book that describes a vampire as warm to the touch, so the steamy scenes were more pleasant ;) I enjoyed the quality of dialogue and Courtney’s inner dialogue, and Maria Marquis’ voice was perfect throughout!Good MMC: He was rougher, colder, meaner this time around and I didn't love it. He's like mean Damon now, and if I continue with the series I hope he comes to be a bit more caring.

I'd been wanting to try a book by Bridget Essex for some time and was happy to find this one, written by Essex and wife Natalie Vivien. Well I can't say too much about the other characters. Besides I like Jane's best friend Ashley. She is fun and sweet too. I read a bunch of lesbian romance novels this year. Most of them very early in the year, in like January-February. This one, however, I think I read just last month. Cliffhanger -- but as the author clearly states, this is an ongoing series, originally put out on Kindle Vella, so it's serialized intentionally.Distraught, Evelyn takes herself into the forests where legends suggest there are creatures with powers and they are, of course, vampires. Sensing her desire for revenge she is turned – interestingly they mention that she must reject all that is good. At first she starves herself until she can no longer stand it and feeds from a young girl. Eventually she faces the beast that killed her family and, of course, when it dies it becomes Jean. She removes a corpse from its coffin in a crypt, takes the wedding dress it was buried in and lies in the coffin – sleeping until the early 19th century. After which she moves over to the New World. The story is so awesome, I really liked that Jane didn't know who she was and she had no past that she could remember. There is a lot of romance and some mystery. The sex scenes were really good and romantic. The only thing is that I really wanted more in the end, I felt that I wanted to know what was going to happen with them in the future, there were just a few things that kinda left me hanging. But nothing that will take away stars for this awesome book, I really loved this story.

First of all, I'd like to start by saying that I'm not an avid critic. I don't review a lot of books and I definately don't get hung up on all of the technicalities and anatomies of a book. The Vampire Next Door” combines the writing talents of Natalie Vivien and her wife Bridget Essex, with the FANTASTIC narration by Maria Marquis. I love the way The Vampire Next Door by J T Hunter was written. The story flows smoothly, drawing me in to the twisted story of John Crutchley. J T Hunter’s research includes letters written by him, interviews, police reports, etc. He is a Ted Bundy type of serial killer, coming across as the harmless guy net door, with a psychopathic ability to fake caring and able to manipulate others to do his bidding. Watch out when the dark comes to light. No conscience. No qualms about lying to achieve his ends.Jane Doe" is left in the forest to die. She is found by a hunter and taken to the hospital where she survives. The doctor watching over her falls in love with her. However, there is more than one person is loves and cares for "Jane Doe". Interestingly (and coincidentally), it’s the second book I’m reading (listening to) with the plot device of vampires trying to live alongside humans who are now aware of, but not fully accepting of, vampires.

Seth shook his head and patted his chest for her to lay on him; he wasn’t moving anywhere he wanted to feel her closer to him, the way she was lying as far away from him as she could made him uneasy. This book focuses as much on the victims and law enforcement officers, as it does the killer and the narrative flows perfectly to tie the whole story together throughout the book. The ending is not what I was expecting or hoping for, but this is not fiction and you cannot change the facts. Courtney Banks owns a failing book store, and her relationship with her girlfriend Mia is falling apart. Courtney doesn't even think she believes in love...that is, until she meets the vampire next door. I got no real sense of Crutchley as a person. We're repeatedly told that he's brilliant, though I saw no evidence of such intelligence. We're told about childish tantrums and we're given an onslaught of his behavior regarding sex. By the end, that's all I knew about this man, who, in this book, is more caricature than intelligent killer.

Good side characters: This time around there was a bit more with her sister and his brother and she did talk to her bestie. But still not really what I would count as true side characters. So in conclusion, cute-ish book, but would have preferred that the prejudice and hate have been dealt with better, as well as getting to know Lare the love interest better. The vampires are pretty traditional; they avoid sunlight and a stake through the heart or beheading will kill. The dead vampire will burn up. They also need invitation to enter a home and are warded and injured by crosses. This makes Evelyn’s choice to carry the cross jean gave her, albeit wrapped in fabric, telling. There is a theme, of course, of reincarnation underpinning the story. What I won’t do, for this free to watch movie, is give it a score. I will say, however, that I have seen much (and substantially) worse. It can be found on YouTube. I read this book in two days and with work, life and the pursuit of writing my own book should tell you that it really kept my attention. JT Hunter is a lawyer that has spent the last two years looking into this case and has done an amazing job presenting the case of JB Crutchley. I like how he notes that with any book like this one there is certain guessing when talking about the person. JT has written a captivating story of a man that had a horrible childhood and some serious issues later in his life.
