About this deal

The Spalding patent 4,880,241 was filed in April 1988. To be valid, a patent must be filed within one year of the date of the invention. This means that this dimple technology was invented by about May 1987. A patent must be novel, useful, and not obvious. This dimple pattern on this golf ball had never been disclosed before, so it was novel. It was useful because this particular dimple pattern wouled travel farther than other golf balls. It was not obvious that this dimple pattern would do this. From 1932 until 1973 – two years after Jones’ death – Spalding sold over 15 different models and two million sets of Bobby Jones clubs. Beginners who are looking for a golf ball that provides distance and forgiveness will appreciate the Super Reactive Titanium Core and soft feel of these golf balls.

Thanks to the Ionomer Cover, the Spalding Molitor Golf Balls ensure a high initial velocity and flight. The cover’s unique composition enhances the ball’s aerodynamics, enabling it to cut through the air with minimal resistance. This translates into longer and straighter shots, giving you a distinct advantage on the course. Whether you’re teeing off or looking to hit a soaring approach shot, these golf balls will provide you with the necessary velocity and flight for outstanding performance. Patents were filed in 1972 in both Great Britain(1) and the United States(2) for this technology. Here is how you can start your own golf ball collection. First read my previous post, Golf Ball Collection, from June. Then use these tools to record the data that you obtain for your golf balls. When it comes to greenside control and the short game, the Spalding Molitor Golf Balls truly shine. Their construction and design facilitate exceptional spin control and shot shaping, enabling you to execute delicate chips, pitches, and bunker shots with precision and finesse. By using these golf balls, you can enhance your ability to get up and down, saving valuable strokes around the green. Practice your short game: Take advantage of the greenside control provided by these golf balls to improve your performance around the green. Focus on executing precise chip shots and pitches to enhance your scoring abilities. The golf ball market continues to be dominated by the Titleist ProV1 and Titleist four-piece version ProV1x golf balls, which made their manufacturer an absolute winner of the 1990s “Golf Ball War”. 70 However, Titleist’s over 15-year old “reign” didn’t scare away other ballmakers. Golfers can thus today choose from more than 1,000 golf balls (excluding those that are not on the USGA and R&A Conforming Ball List) 71 designed to provide more control, achieve greater distances, increased durability, optimal spin, etc. and ultimately, make the game more enjoyable while helping golfers improve their score. A Glance into the Future

Yes, the Spalding Molitor Golf Balls are permitted for use in tournaments. Their construction and performance meet the requirements of most golf associations and organizations. Experiment with your swing speed: These golf balls respond well to different swing speeds, so adjust your swing accordingly to maximize distance and control. In 1893, Spalding bought the Lamb Knitting Machine Company in Chicopee, Mass which made, obviously, knitting machines and, less obviously, eggbeaters, bicycle wheels, and rifles. In the 1960s, Spalding introduced the Spalding Executive line of clubs and balls and the Top-Flite Elite Professional irons with the Bird on Ball logo. These were said to be Moe Norman’s favorite clubs and are rated by the MyGolfSpy Forum’s resident vintage club expert Big Stu as the third greatest pure forged blade of all time. Work, Bertram G., and Coburn Haskell. “Ball.” U.S. Patent 622,834, filed August 9, 1898, and issued April Jones famously retired from golf after winning the 1930 version of the Grand Slam. Shortly thereafter, Spalding signed him as spokesperson, vice president and director of research. Jones immediately put his Georgia Tech engineering degree to good use. As we’ve discussed before, it’s extremely difficult for legacy brands to remain relevant, especially when new, fresh brands get aggressive. Titleist and PING were established competitors, while TaylorMade and Callaway were flexing their muscles. New entries such as Nike and Adams were turning heads as well. And Spalding’s ace in the hole Strata was old news by the time the Pro V1 and Nike Tour Accuracy hit the scene. In 1977 while having molds made for my new line of Irons at a mold makers in Oxnard California, I spotted a very interesting club in a bag at the rear of the shop. It was the mold makers attempt to make at a hollow head, wooden shape club. I asked him about it and he said he had shown it to Spaulding, Wilson and MacGregor and their response was “It will never sell”!!!!

Spalding’s contributions to modern golf are considerable. The Kro-Flite in 1930 was golf’s first liquid center golf ball, while the Spalding DOT was a mid-century icon. Dynamiter wedges featured deep grooves, often in unusual shapes, that ultimately prompted the USGA to outlaw them. Donnelley, Paul. Firsts, Lasts & Onlys of Golf: Presenting the most amazing golf facts from the last 600 There was obviously nothing magical about radium. Other materials that were experimented with didn’t make much difference either. Thus the quest for the perfect core material continued throughout much of the rest of the history of golf balls. Meanwhile, Haskell sold both his company and patent to the Spalding Company and retired as a very wealthy man. 62 Modern Golf Ball The Super Reactive Titanium Core and high-energy performance of the Spalding Molitor Golf Balls make them an excellent choice for boosting your distance off the tee. These golf balls are designed to maximize energy transfer, resulting in longer shots that soar through the air effortlessly. By using these golf balls, you can add significant yardage to your drives and gain a competitive edge over your fellow golfers. Achieve Greater Accuracy with Approach Shots

Pay attention to ball flight: The Spalding Molitor Golf Balls are designed to deliver a high launch and more loft for longer flight. Take note of your ball flight patterns to make the most of this feature and adjust your strategy accordingly. In 1901, Haskell founded the Haskell Golf Ball Company and launched the manufacture of the rubberwound ball. Later that year, his ball “helped” Walter Travis (1861-1927) win the U.S. Amateur and become the first golf player to win a Major using the novel golf ball. Haskell’s ball was also taken up by Sandy Herd (1868-1944) and Laurie Auchterlonie (1867-1948), the winner of the 1902 Open Championship and 1902 U.S. Open, respectively, which convinced most of their fellow players to follow their example. 54 Except for the British who found the Haskell ball “unsporting”. 55 The British had a point when it comes to several things, however, a new revolution was already on the way and it could no longer be halted. But there was still plenty of room left for improvement which is exactly what the leading ballmakers were trying to do over the next decades. 56

Acts of Parliament banning golf.” National Library of Scotland. Accessed August 3, 2016. http://digital.nls.uk/golf-in-scotland/banned/1457-act.html. I believe that Spalding replaced golf ball #349 with golf ball #241 in 1979 because the new icosahedron dimple pattern that appears on ball #241 was similar to the one that Acushnet Co. disclosed in their 1972 patent application(3). This application disclosed a golf ball with 332 dimples arranged in the form of an icosahedron with dimple diameters between 0.125 to 0.245 inches. The Spalding DOT Diamond golf ball #349 had 332 dimples with a diameter of 0.14 inches(4) well within the range of the Acushnet Co. application. Presumably Spalding replaced the #349 ball with ball #241 to avoid any infringement issues. Years ago, before I had even thought about collecting golf balls let alone write about them, my dad gave me a birthday gift of 15 Top-Flite golf balls (five sleeves of three balls). They were TOP-FLITE XL II. The sleeves were labeled ‘HIGH TRAJECTORY’ and ‘THE LONGEST BALLS’. Included with the golf balls was an advertisement sheet shown below. The USGA lists began including the golf ball color, compression, construction, cover, and number of dimples in 1990. In 1990 Spalding listed 3 balls with 336 dimples, 38 balls with 332 dimples, 14 with 422 dimples, and 5 with 492 dimples. By 1995 there were no balls listed with either 336 or 332 dimples, 22 balls with 410 dimples, 96 balls with 422 dimples and 10 balls with 492 dimples. KKR wanted Spalding to make money the KKR way. Former Proctor & Gamble chief Edwin Artzt came on as chairman, with former Kraft, Inc executive vice president James Craigie becoming CEO. Both were smart, competent leaders but had little golf experience.

William Taylor, “Golf Ball,” U.S. Patent 878,254 filed September 11, 1906, and issued February 1908. The ball ‘Spalding Molitor’ is listed on the USGA Conforming List from August 5, 1975 until February 15, 1979 when two separate entries appeared. The first entry was “Spalding Molitor (All markings on seam) and the second entry was ‘Spalding Molitor (Molitor on pole)’. Ball # 537 in my collection has all the markings on the seam so the correct date of introduction was Feb. 15, 1979 and not Aug. 5, 1975, as reported last time. At the 2003 PGA Show, Hogan introduced the Apex 50 blade commemorating its 50 th anniversary, the game improvement CFT irons, and the Carnoustie and Riviera wedges. The company also announced an alliance with Bob Bettinardi to create a line of high-end Hogan putters.
