When you picture an independent bookshop, it’s likely that what springs to mind closely resembles Kemptown Bookshop in Brighton. This is your quintessential UK independent bookshop. If you visit Lewes for one reason, let it be this stunning bookshop with visible wood beams on the inside and out at the top of the high street. With the south-coastal city of Brighton being a hub of UK art and culture, as well as a loudly and proudly queer city, it’s no wonder that so many independent bookshops can be found in the wonderful city of Brighton. This was taken onboard by our excellent waiter and a main course plus dessert were delivered in good time.

There’s no escaping the beach in Brighton and its twin Hove. Stretching for miles along the front of the city, the pebbly beach is the perfect place for a family day out. Leave your car in one of the city’s NCP car parks and you won’t have far to carry all those beach essentials. Enjoy easy and convenient access to major venues like the Theatre Royal and Brighton Centre, the Lanes and Churchill Square Shopping Centre. I know that the book festival will be a delight for all of the attendees, but for those who cannot make it, I hope it will make you see marginalised people, advocate for them, make space for them and remind you to be the change that you want to see. Another Hove bookshop, The Book Nook is a specialist bookshop that sells a wide range of children’s books. An adorable bookshop requires a delightful name, and The Book Nook is certainly that.
