About this deal

The SW271 is supplied with modular shade which is invaluable when working in brighter situations. (Image credit: BenQ) Response time is 5ms grey-to-grey, which should be good for video (and gaming), as response times below 8ms are generally considered good by today's standards. The monitor also features a built-in USB3 hub with two ports, and an SD card reader.

First and foremost, the monitor now supports third-party hardware calibration for those using CalMan Studio or Light Illusion’s ColourSpace. This is a “good news, bad news” situation. Good, because hardware calibration is superior to software calibration, and third-party solutions are more widely supported than proprietary software like BenQ’s own Palette Master Element; Bad, because these are two of the most advanced and expensive color calibration solutions on the market and they’re aimed squarely at the high-end cinema crowd. The SW271C has a 27-inch display with 3840x2160 (UHD) resolution. It's using an IPS panel for wide viewing angles, and its matte finish helps reduce glare from overhead lights. A shade hood is included, with all the parts for a horizontal or vertical orientation. The display is, as expected, downright gorgeous. It's mostly the same as the older SW271, with 100% sRGB, 100% AdobeRGB, and 95% DCI-P3 color reproduction, as measured with a SpyderX Pro colorimeter. The last issue related to software is something that certainly concerns me personally. Although we have seen a number of software updates to the Palette Master Element calibration software, the bugs present in the software prevent one from being able to fully calibrate the screen using different color profiles. I have attempted to profile the SW271 with its native gamut and the results of the calibration never work, with the calibration results failing at the end of the process. The same goes for sRGB and DCI-P3 that I tested out. It seems like the monitor should just be set to AdobeRGB or sRGB color profile while the software bugs are being ironed out, since the factory calibration results are pretty decent…As you can see, I got a “Passed” summary, showing good calibration results with Delta staying mostly low (this was far from being the case when using “Native”, “sRGB” or “DCI-P3” profiles). I knew this verification result wasn’t thorough by any means, so the next step was to fire up DisplayCAL and see what the colors really look like after the hardware LUT calibration. six-section, clip-together modular hood is supplied to provide proper shading and more effectively eliminate reflections, ensuring optimum viewing conditions regardless of the time of day. The hood’s modular design means it’s easily reconfigured with the monitor is being used in the vertical orientation. As with all the BenQ PhotoVue monitors, the SW271 is calibrated before it leaves the factory and a printed report is included in the supplied documentation. Subsequently, hardware calibration – via an external colorimeter – is performed via BenQ’s proprietary Palette Master Element software (supplied on a CD-ROM). Hardware calibration is generally considered superior to software-based calibration (which also requires a colorimeter), but the latter will still ensure you keep the monitor within specifications over time. It's possible to save the results of performance as an HTML document so that you have a record of how the monitor is performing, which could be particularly important for colour critical work or to show that your computer and monitor is set up correctly. While BenQ may have bent the truth a little bit with the claims of HDR and 10-bit color, there was no need to do the same for color gamut coverage and Delta E. Color accuracy on this display is top-notch. Testing the BenQ SW271C with an X-Rite i1Display Pro Plus in both i1Profiler and DisplayCAL, we were able to confirm 99% coverage of AdobeRGB, 90% coverage of DCI-P3, and 100% coverage of sRGB for this panel. Notably, that’s actually a lower spec for DCI-P3 coverage than the old SW271, but BenQ tells us that it made this trade-off on purpose, saying that “though this panel has slightly lower DCI-P3, it has greater color and uniformity performance.” This resolution provides more than enough space for working with several programs on at the same time, and you can view a full 8-megapixel photo at 100% on the screen. If you regularly deal with large images or need to view a lot of an image, in detail, then the high-resolution will be particularly useful. For 4K (UHD) video, the monitor's resolution is ideal, letting you view the full detail in the video. BenQ's Palette Master Element is like a slower, more basic version of the i1 Display Pro software you get with the i1 Display Pro calibrator, although it does have the benefit of updating the screen's LUT.
