About this deal

The student’s subsequent experiences should include limbs / spines and any other gaps in anatomical positioning. The inclusion of different thorax / abdomen positions could also prove valuable. There is no requirement to repeat log lateral chest / abdomen x-rays. NPL is committed to sharing its expertise with industry to build and enhance measurement skills and capabilities. Metrology, the science of measurement, enables you to question and plan your processes, improve the quality of your products and reduce your costs. This can have a direct impact on productivity and profitability. Our training covers the importance of metrology, advancements in measurement science and the application of good measurement practices. To help students prepare for their practical training, we have provided them with an induction form for use with the clinical coach at their first meeting. Students have been asked to complete the first section of this which provides the clinical coach with details about the students learning and any NPL tasks in which they have previous experience. We hope that this assists clinical coaches in the early planning stages and getting started with the NPL. The reflective comments box should NOT be used as an explanation / narrative of how the skill was executed. This detail should be in the patient description box, and the reflective comments should be purely reflective and suggestive of how the student progresses with this skill moving forward, e.g. add further experiences (what might these be) or is the student ready to claim competence. Examples of reflective comments (2016-2022 NPL) Section

In logging their experiences, the student should note either in their case description or reflective comments the name of the witness(es) used. Once you gain access to your NPL you will be able to use the next available case to open the skill and sign it off. This could potentially be done in the same day providing you have sufficient, valid evidence in your written/electronic record to support this when audited by either CAW staff or the awarding body. Whilst this new version of the NPL contains a reduced number of tasks, the actual requirements for completing some tasks are quite considerable. In our experience students can find this confusing, so guidance from the clinical coach regarding task expectations, (based on the case load in your practice) may need to be clarified. Simulations are also a very good way for the student to gain experience. However, these need to be carefully managed to ensure the simulation is as realistic as possible, and that it does not turn into a question and answer session.I now feel confident to position cats, and dogs for lateral chest and abdominal x-rays. I now need to focus on limb and spine x-rays as I struggle more with these. As well as introducing the new professional behaviour assessment tool, it has been agreed that the practical placement hours requirement would be reduced from 2,100 to 1,800, calculated as 35 hours per week over one year, and would therefore comply with current HMRC National Minimum Wage requirements.

There is no need to repeat log the dispensing of loose tablets into child proof bottles. The student should focus on the other aspects of this task, to include a good variety of experiences. We offer classroom courses, e-learning or a combination of both (blended). You can attend courses, which run all over the country, or we can come to you. The NPL was updated in August to reflect recent changes made to the Day-one Skills List, making it more focused on veterinary nurses’ everyday clinical skills. The Day-one Skills List also added a new professional behaviour assessment tool in early September, allowing veterinary nurses to evaluate if they are meeting the professional standards expected of a registered veterinary nurse in practice. We do ask that students only attempt those tasks for which they have covered the underpinning knowledge for at university, as this underpinning knowledge will ultimately form part of their overall competency. NPL e-Learning courses available, includes modules covering General Measurement science applications, Dimensional Measurement and a range of Specialist Measurement courses across a variety of applications. Course modules provide participants with the opportunity to develop or extend their industry-applicable skills – across metrology, measurement and testing, and calibration in both general and specialist applications. We have recently made a number of improvements to our Nursing Progress Log (NPL), an optional online assessment tool for student veterinary nurses.

Ensure that you document an appropriate range of points so that across all of your experiences you show a good breadth of experience: Analysis for Innovators (A4I) enables innovation and improves productivity and competitiveness for UK businesses. It is led by Innovate UK, in partnership with NPL and other laboratories. This popular funding programme is launching its eighth round and has so far funded more than 270 projects. It is usual that during the course of NPL completion, there are some tasks which students will struggle to gain experience in because cases are few and far between. A typical example would be first aid cases.

Specific guidance for the 2016-2022 NPL skills

Where this occurs, it would be really useful for the clinical coach to write a comment at the end of placement, noting the student’s progress. Providing the students previous experiences cover a range of dogs (as suggested), the student should avoid logging any more dogs, and focus solely on cats. In making the decision regarding student competence, the clinical coach will then liaise with the relevant witness(es) and reach a decision regarding overall task competence which should then be recorded in their decision of competence. Do witnesses need to write up formal witness statements? No measurement is perfect — the level of doubt associated with a measurement is called ‘measurement uncertainty’, and it is an essential concept across all areas of science and engineering. We have a pathway of e-learning courses focused on honing your uncertainty skills, whether you’re a beginner or an expert. There is no requirement for the student to log any more experiences of using a wet floor sign. The student should focus on other H+S tasks / legislation
