The mould wash concentrate is a fungicidal wash that removes the mould from walls and ceilings. It works across a variety of surfaces including tiles, wood and painted surfaces. Mildew is a surface fungus that has a grey or white fluffy appearance. You'll usually find it on surfaces in moist areas such as the bathroom and kitchen. Mildew is easier to remove. All you need is a scrubbing brush and a store-bought cleaner to clean and a Perma-Vent for future protection. What is mould? The MCS Mould Eradication Kit is supplied with the required Cleaning Solution (MCS1) and Paint Additive (MCS3), along with the recommended PPE equipment (masks, gloves etc.) to treat and clean mould issues in domestic properties.

Try to avoid cold spots – if there’s a gap between your wall insulation and your loft insulation, for example, try to get this fixed as it will attract condensation and possibly mould. Keep in mind that in some circumstances cavity wall insulation can be the cause of damp, but this tends to be rare. See our advice on penetrating damp for more details. If extractor fans aren't cutting it, the next thing to consider is a dehumidifier, which will draw moisture out of the air. These can be particularly useful if you often dry clothes inside the house – another common source of excess humidity. There are different types and brands available, so read up on how to buy the best dehumidifier to find one that does the job.

MCS1 Mould Clear Solution carries the HSE Approval No 9453; MCS3 Paint Additive carries the HSE Approval No 7656. Mould needs very little nutrient and will grow on walls and ceilings irrespective of the decorative finish. Fitting roof ventilation tiles and/or ventilated soffits (under the roof and guttering) to allow air through the loftMould caused by the fabric of a building and its interior spaces tends to occur in areas with a high transfer of heat or in places where large amounts of moisture form.

These are basically small plumbing parts that are fitted into the cistern to introduce a small amount of warm water into the cold water that feeds into the toilet tank. Depending on your DIY plumbing skills, you may need to call in a professional to fit the valve. Tips to reduce toilet condensation If damp or condensation caused by a structural issue produces mould, it is the Landlord’s legal responsibility to rectify it, under section 11 of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985. What advice can I give to my tenants about mould? A refrigerant dehumidifier works by drawing air through a filter and over cold coils. Water condenses on the coils and drips into a water tank. This type of dehumidifier needs the air to be warm to work, so it’s best suited for use in heated rooms. We spoke to EnviroVent, a Which? Trusted Trader that specialises in whole house ventilation systems and extractor fans for bathrooms and kitchens. EnviroVent recommend a system called Positive Input Ventilation. It draws fresh air from outside a building in and then distributes it into all rooms through a centralised system that is usually mounted in the loft. These causes of damp often leave a ‘tidemark’.If your home is newly built it may be damp because the water used during itsconstruction (for example, in plaster) is still drying out.If your home is damp for any of these reasons it may take weeks of heating andventilating to dry out. Hiring a dehumidifier will help. If you do not think the dampcomes from any of these causes, it is probably condensation. What is condensation?Dehumidifiers are an affordable and portable aid to reducing condensation; our research into the best dehumidifiers can help you buy the most helpful model. How to stop condensation Use lids on saucepans when cooking. This stops the moisture from the steam filling the kitchen and condensing on surfaces and it will also save the tenants money! Mould can develop in places with insufficient insulation. This is most noticeable on external walls with inadequate insulation, as the temperature on the inside of the external wall can cool down extremely fast in autumn and winter, causing condensation. Dehumidifiers vastly improve damp and condensation problems in a home because they reduce moisture levels. They’re most useful in rooms where there’s a lot of humidity. For example, a kitchen or bathroom. A room where clothes are dried. Or in a bedroom where condensation builds up from the heat caused by breathing. Install a highly affordable and zero-maintenance Perma-Vent passive ventilation system in the bathroom and kitchen.

We add moisture to the air all the time just by breathing, as well as from cooking, drying clothes, and from our pets and house plants. Reduce the amount of moisture produced in the first place by keeping lids on pans when cooking, drying clothes outside when possible, and if you use a tumble dryer, making sure it’s vented to the outside. We recommend installing Perma-Vents in high-moisture rooms such as the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom. These systems work by introducing fresh air into your home and distributing it evenly throughout, helping to reduce moisture levels and control condensation. Our range of PIV units includes the Drimaster Eco and Flatmaster ranges, which are designed to suit different types of properties.
