About this deal

It's easy to discern in Mountains of the Mind the outlines of a superb book, but it doesn't live up to that promise. Combining accounts of legendary mountain ascents with vivid descriptions of his own forays into wild, high landscapes, Robert McFarlane reveals how the mystery of the world’s highest places has came to grip the Western imagination—and perennially draws legions of adventurers up the most perilous slopes. There is the Midas light, the rich yellow light which spills lengthwise across the mountains, turning everything it touches to gold.

I loved how inconsistent their rough appearance - their indestructible tweed breetches, their bristling mutton-chops and moustaches, the silk and the bear grease with which they insulated themselves against the cold - seemed to be with their almost fastidious sensitivity to the beauties of the landscapes they moved in.This diaphanous landscape, this quintessence of purity - these were not the mountains I knew; they were the mountains of my dreams. It is a reflective, meandering tale about how humans decided – for no evolutionarily imperative purpose – to risk their very lives to go up some very imposing chunks of rock.

Pisando por ese crujiente popurrí geológico, guía en mano, me lanzaba sobre las piedras, las reunía y las guardaba en la bolsa de lona que llevaba, donde sonaban al entrechocar unas con otras.

I had been wearing thin gloves all the way up and, from jabbing them into the ice slope, three fingertips on the right-hand glove had been ripped off. Today, the emotions and attitudes which impelled the early mountaineers still prosper in the Western imagination: indeed if anything they are more unshiftably ensconced there.
