About this deal

Quite how Hondo can claim any connection with Club 414 is baffling, because although they may now own the building, they have absolutely no claim to the brand, or any right to claim the legacy created by their previous owners. It was a coffee panna cotta (although actually more of a fluffy mouse) with a chocolate ganache top and some crumbs to sprinkle over it. This was also when the top trouser button was undone – fantastically delicious end to the meal. We finished the meal with a dessert to share – peanut butter ice cream with baobab crisps. We immediately dived in so no photo. The salty creaminess of the ice cream went really well with the surprisingly citrus flavoured honeycomb crisps. Electric Avenue which is now part of the street market was built in the 1880s and was one of the first streets to have electric light. Glazed iron canopies covered the footpath, but these were significantly damaged by WW2 bombs, and finally removed in the 1980s. The song " Electric Avenue" was written by Eddy Grant referring to this area of the market. In 2016, Electric Avenue was refurbished with funding from the Mayor of London's High Street Fund, Lambeth Council, Transport for London and the Heritage Lottery fund to include an illuminated sign celebrating the area's history. Today, clever and creative cooking abounds at Nicholas Balfe’s shabby-chic eatery. In the evenings, the kitchen serves an ever-evolving set menu of four or seven courses – like a tasting menu, but without the fuss and pomp. Expect seasonal, predominantly plant-based dishes arranged in offbeat ways, with contrasting flavours and textures at the heart of every plate. In 2017, the team opened the Wine Store next door, selling 130 lines of low-intervention, organic and biodynamic wine from across the world.

You might think the people best placed to ‘retain the diverse, fun and world-famous atmosphere of 414’ would be the very people who created it in the first place, but Hondo has made no offer to Tony or Louise. Danclair’s is the newest opening from Brian Danclair, founder of much-loved Brixton Village stalwart Fish, Wings & Tings. Inspired by the hospitality of his grandmother Valentina, Danclair’s serves family dishes at a long sharing table in the centre of the restaurant, allowing for a convivial dining experience. The menu draws inspiration from across the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe, with dishes including BBQ pork ribs, empanadas with raisins and olives, and marinated grilled king prawns with tamarind sauce – alongside a weekend brunch. In the middle of Brixton Village, this tiny Japanese eatery specialises in Osaka street food such as yaki soba, yaki udon and okonomiyaki pancakes. It’s a busy place, but you can usually beat the queues if you swing by around lunchtime or mid-afternoon. Be sure to try the okonomiyaki, served with prawns, squid kimchi and sweetcorn – it’s authentic and delicious. Next course was hispi cabbage and braised venison pie with potato topping. There was plenty for two (in fact I had seconds the next day). The meat was soft and succulent and we served it with a hefty red wine to make it a real celebration.a b "Police called as council meeting hit by protests over Brixton's 'gentrification' ". With the help of friends and family, Etta’s Seafood Kitchen has grown organically since it launched via Brixton’s ‘empty shops project’ in 2011. This is the place to head to for celebrations and gatherings with a family feel.
