About this deal

For an affordable adoption fee, you, your family or friends, can sponsor a whale that needs your help. Companies or other organizations can also adopt a whale if they would like to engage in philanthropic efforts.

The most well-studied orca population in the world, the Southern Residents are also one of the most endangered. After their population was reduced by about 40% through live capture and sale to the developing marine park industry in the 1960s and 70s, the Southern Residents struggled to recover, and were listed under the US Endangered Species Act in 2005. In recent years because of research and science, we are slowly understanding how remarkable these creatures are. They play a critical role in the health of our planet. Which is why now more than ever we need to protect them. Dolphins and whales are closely related. Orcas were given the name ‘killer whale’ by ancient sailors’ observations of groups of orcas hunting and preying on larger whale species. They called orcas ballena asesina, or ‘killer whale.’ Their Latin name, Orcinus orca, also reflects this observation of orcas feeding on large whales. Orcinus translates to ‘of the kingdom of the dead,’ and orca refers to a kind of whale. We know that orcas are top predators, yes, but not the vicious ‘whale killers’ that the ancient mariners thought them to be. If you could give orcas another name, what would you call them? What do orcas eat? Hotjar sets this cookie when a Recording starts and is read when the recording module is initialized, to see if the user is already in a recording in a particular session. The A73 matriline is part of the A4 pod of northern resident killer whales and is made up of matriarch, Springer (A73) and her offspring, Spirit (A104) and Storm (A116). Springer, born in 2000, is named after Springer Point on Sonora Island (50°18’00″N 125°13’00”) at the south end of Johnstone Strait and is quite the celebrity!

Due to vanishing salmon populations caused by various man-made issues, most notably destructive and careless fishing practices . The orca population has since dwindled to only 74 individuals remaining. A cookie set by YouTube to measure bandwidth that determines whether the user gets the new or old player interface. Another North Pacific ecotype is Bigg’s, or transient, orcas. These are mammal-eating orcas, and like Residents, different communities of Bigg’s orcas specialize on different prey – from harbour seals to minke whales to gray whale calves. They live in small groups and travel frequently over large home ranges, from Southern California up to the Arctic Circle. Also very family-oriented, Bigg’s orcas live in smaller groups but form close associations with their relatives, and some offspring stay with their mother for life. Transient orcas have been recorded by FEROP in the Western North Pacific, and populations on both sides of the Pacific carry high loads of contaminants. As top predators, these mammal-eating orcas accumulate pollutants that are transferred through the food web and end up stored in the blubber of these whales. Although the desire to hold orcas captive put them on the path to vanishing, they are now threatened by prey depletion, toxic pollution, and acoustic and physical disturbance. Without more food, clean waters, and a safe and healthy home, we may lose this unique community forever.

If you are looking for gifts for whale lovers, these are perfect to give for birthdays, holidays, or for no reason at all. These symbolical whale adoptions are also wonderful gifts for scuba divers and ocean lovers. The J17 matriline belongs to the southern resident pod of killer whales known as J pod. Princess Angeline (J17) born in 1977, was the head of the matriline before she sadly passed away in 2019. She was named after the daughter of Duwamish elder Chief Seattle who Seattle is named after. Princess Angeline left behind three surviving offspring: daughters Tahlequah (J35) and Kiki (J53), and son Moby (J44). Her oldest daughter Polaris (J28) and Polaris’ youngest calf Dipper (J54) sadly passed away in October 2016. Polaris’ older calf Star (J46) is still alive and well.
