So, once again, thank you all for the opportunity, again, to the Council of Foreign Relations for this opportunity to talk about navigating digital equity. Bringing greetings on behalf of the Community College of Aurora here in Aurora, Colorado. And let’s just jump right into it. There’s actually a Center for Digital Equity at Arizona State University (ASU), and last week we had a gathering of all of our institutions to get a better understanding of what does digital equity mean as it comes from the ASU center. What does it mean for each of our different types of institutions, and I will tell you that the one that was hardest hit was the one you talked about and that’s tribal just in terms of access, in terms of resources. At the end of a concert that the Police played in Hong Kong in February of 1980, bassist/frontman Sting bids the crowd farewell by saying, “Thank you, Hong Kong. Bye-bye, [we’ll] see you again who-knows-when.” Fans old enough to remember will likely recognize this sequence from its original 1982 release as the long-form VHS/Beta video The Police Around the World. Out of print for many years, the video has finally been released on Blu-Ray and DVD. Most crucially, fans can now enjoy an accompanying set of live performances on CD and vinyl for the first time. (The collection is available in DVD/CD, Blu-Ray/CD, and DVD/LP configurations, while the CD draws from recordings that don’t entirely line up with the ones featured in the film.)

We’re watching, especially in research, the confidence levels reduce—heavily reduced now in the public’s perception of what higher education is to provide in comparison to what it once provided. Higher education in many communities isn’t necessarily being seen as the sole or the primary tool towards social economic mobility as it once was twenty, thirty years ago.And to answer that question as we talk about digital equity, it’s the assurance of ensuring that all have access to the information technology available and to have the capacity to engage in society and productive citizenship. And so we’ll talk about that and let me just start sharing the screen and we’ll jump right into it.

Originally released on VHS in 1982 (and later laserdisc), Around The World is a documentary that chronicles The Police’s first world tour, as the band travel to Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, India, Egypt, France, Latin America and Los Angeles.
