About this deal

Set in London in the 1800s, Hetty Feather is just a small baby when her mother leaves her at the Foundling Hospital. The Hospital cares for abandoned children but first Hetty must go to live with a foster family in the countryside until she’s big enough to attend school. When she turns six years old, Hetty’s returned to the Hospital and is secretly reunited with her mother who’s working there. She’s given a beautiful new name, Sapphire Battersea, and she hopes this will also mean a new life! But things don't always go as planned and the books follow the twists and turns of Hetty's adventures including when she goes out to work as a maid for a wealthy man. Well, growing up I was always a massive fan of Jacqueline’s work and it is thanks to Jacqueline that I found my love of reading. I must also admit she is still one of my guilty pleasures.

There are some very raw subjects that are touched upon within the book, illness, death, physical and emotional abuse. Jacqueline handles these subjects in a way that the reader feels the emotions and lives out the pain. Elspeth, age 12- ' Clover Moon, is a tragic, exciting and interesting novel. It is about Clover, a girl who wants to escape her past and see what future lies ahead of her.'A semi-crossover with the Hetty Feather series, this was a slightly harrowing and actually quite dark story. I enjoyed the cameos of characters we know from the later Hetty Feather books - like Thelma the dancer! - and Clover's abusive childhood is vividly illustrated in all its gritty, grimy, pea-souper squalor, and it's quite depressing to think that this is a pretty accurate depiction of Victorian London. Sadie Parker, age 11- 'A thrilling story that really captures the life of a poor girl in Victorian Britain.' Dame Jacqueline Wilson is in her 70s now and has written well over 100 books. She is a true credit to our nation. I know so many girls have and continue to grow up reading her books and I would like to thank her from the bottom of my heart for sending me on massive adventures and learning the compassion and insightfulness that I have with me now as an adult. Jacqueline Wilsons books will always have a special place in my heart and I will still continue to count her books as some of my favourites from my childhood. You truely are a legend. I thank you for everything you have done for me and for other children along the way. Yearling (imprint of Random House Children's Books) an imprint of Random House Children's Publishers UK

Clover herself is an engaging central character. She, too, has a deep well of kindness within her, which we see as she looks after smaller children, first in her Cripps Alley home and then in Miss Smith's refuge. But she's also impetuous and tart, sometimes even ever-so-slightly insolent. And she has a fabulous sense of humour and a huge imagination. You could fail to like her or to wish her well. Clover Moon lives in Cripps Alley, a slum street in Victorian England. Her father works at the factory and the heavy work has taken a toll on his health. He likes to drink an ale or two after work, spending money the family can barely afford. Clover's mother died giving birth to her younger sister, Megs, a wispy, shy child. Father married again - to Mildred, a sharp-tongued woman who is free with a beating, particularly if the beating goes to Clover. Clover has another four half-siblings and it's Clover, rather than Mildred, who takes care of them. As well as winning many awards for her books, including the Children's Book of the Year, Jacqueline is a former Children's Laureate, and in 2008 she was appointed a Dame. Rose was a very unlikeable narrator. She is a dark-haired, rebellious, pale-skinned, plain child who loves drawing and writing. Oh, where have I seen that before? But I hate her relationship with Mr Walker or ‘Paris’ because I find it creepy and their interaction is defiantly not my favourite. They weren’t that bad and I could look past it.

Georgie Docwra, age 11- 'I rate this book 5 stars and whilst all of Jacqueline Wilson's books have all been brilliant and I am her biggest fan, this is the best Jacqueline Wilson book I've ever read!'
