About this deal

The only real downside to 32-bit float is that it uses up to 33% more storage space than conventional 24-bit files. You get approximately 30hrs (24-bit) and 23hrs (32-bit) on a 16GB micro SDcard. If you are used to shooting video, this amount of data is tiny in comparison. I also wished that the Zoom F2 could support stereo recordings. Imagine the number of recording applications you could use it on, from live performances, studio recordings, etc. – if it did have support for stereo recordings. WaveLab Cast supports up to 96KHz audio quality and includes a high-end re-sampler. RestoreRig removes noise and unwanted sounds. You can assemble new files using the snap functions and crossfade options. Once you’re done, export your sound files in any popular audio format. While a 32-bit float audio file is 100% larger than a 16-bit audio file, you can get near 750 hours of recording time if you were to use a 512GB microSD card on the F2.

Whether you choose the F2 or the F2-BT we think these are another killer product release from Zoom. Features The Zoom F2can come in very handy in a lot of situations. It is an affordable and relatively easy way to record 32-bit float audio. The Zoom F2 features one-touch buttons for record, play, stop, and volume up/down. There is no display and no menus. The only visual references you have are LEDs that provide an indication that it is recording, battery status, and power. You can’t actually set any levels on the Zoom F2. You just hit record and that is it. As the Zoom F2 only records in 32-bit float it probably doesn’t need any audio level controls. Otherwise, most of the work of cleaning up and syncing audio to video should be done on your DAW. Conclusion The above values are approximate. Continuous battery operation times were determined using in-house testing methods. They will vary greatly according to use conditions.Aimed towards podcasters, videographers, bloggers, and journalists – the Zoom F2 is incredibly small and lightweight. It’s not water-resistant though. The F2-BT features the same amazing recording quality and form factor as the F2 with additional Bluetooth capabilities. With Zoom’s free F2 Control app, you can use the F2-BT to wirelessly start/stop recordings, display battery levels, adjust output volume, control lo-cut and more. The Bluetooth option is especially useful if you’re working with video, as you can pair the F2-BT with a Bluetooth-enabled timecode synchronisation device.

The nice thing about 32-bit float audio recordings is that you don’t have to do anything special or process them with any type of software. You just bring them into your NLE and you are good to go. If you want to, you can use Zoom’s F2 Editor instewad. You have the option to choose from two high-quality recording resolutions with the F2-BT. These include 32-bit / 44.1 kHz or 32-bit / 48 kHz, both in mono uncompressed BWF (Broadcast Wave File) formats. Audio quality is also sustained as there is no data compression when you create audio files. Be sure to make use of the onboard 80 Hz low-cut filter to reduce rumble and bass buildup. Bluetooth Connection Capabilities The only problem with the belt clip is it is very stiff which makes it hard to actually put on a belt or someone’s pants. The included lavalier microphone’s connector is also quite tall so you need to be careful it doesn’t get bent or broken if someone sits down. Powered by two AAA alkaline/lithium batteries, NiMH rechargeable batteries or USB power supply (Zoom AD-17, Art. 325751 - not included) The Zoom F2 Editor allows you to change settings, which you should before you start recording anything serious. Some of the settings include adding a low cut filter, file naming conventions, battery type, auto power-off, Bluetooth function, and formatting the SD card when necessary.Since I’m quite used to recording on the Rode Wireless Go, where I would send the audio directly into my camera, I found it a slight hassle having to sync up the audio & video later on. However, I also understand that most field recordings are done in this manner, whereby rather than syncing straightaway, a clapboard would be used to assist in synchronizing of picture and sound.
