About this deal

They are ideal for children who enjoy the Scoop McLaren Books by Helen Castles, the Clifftoppers books by Fleur Hitchcock, the Agent Zaiba books by Annabelle Sami and are an excellent precursor to the Sinclair’s Mysteries by Katherine Woodfine, the Jane Austen Mysteries by Julia Golding or the Murder Most Unladylike series by Robin Stevens. Justice’s suspicious mind – from her father’s profession and her mother’s crime writing career – had her wondering at murder. They find out at the end that Matron killed Miss Thomas because once when Mis Thomas was the games teacher, she rescued Justice's friend Rose's mum from a snowstorm but left Matron's daughter who died.

The slick and raised parts, as in the pictures of the other books in the series on the back, are an added treat for those who appreciate the textures of book covers.Jeg har tidligere læst krimier for voksne skrevet af Elly Griffiths, men dette er mit første bekendtskab med forfatteren som børnebogsforfatter. Much to Justice’s delight, the taxi driver who picked her up from the station lets slip that his brother, the local undertaker, recently had cause to visit the school. This clever, intuitive, kind character has endeared herself to so many readers, including the adults, like me, who realize that great storytelling knows no age limits.

In the tradition of Malory Towers, Hogwarts and Enid Blyton adventures, this is a school tale with a resourceful heroine to savour and wonderful period details. Introduced to a whole new world of boarding school terminology with an occasional smattering of Latin, Justice first has to navigate the world of making friends, coping with a strict regimen and the unanimous adoration amongst her peers of head girl, Helena Bliss. And, despite herself, she makes friends with some of the other pupils and one of the maids at Highbury. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The post-war period of the early 1950s is well-captured, and the book has all the feel of Malory Towers and St Clare’s, complete with tuck boxes and midnight feasts of sardines and tinned fruit but with the added spice of dastardly behaviour and murder thrown into the mix. When Mr Arthur dies in mysterious circumstances, Justice soon has a list of questions in her journal: why hasn't he been given a proper military funeral? Young men are leaving their families to fight in the war and everyone at home is adapting to living with less and organizing into community units for safety and survival. Herbert Jones also knows the head mistress of the school, Miss Delores de Vere, a friendship Justice is still trying to figure out, so there’s a ready connection for Herbert to keep apprised of how Justice is doing.

Add a snow storm that is deep and unrelenting confining everyone indoors and what more could you possibly want? Secondly, you gain an insight into Justice’s character; she is not only a keen observer of her school mates and the staff at Highbury House Boarding School for the Daughters of Gentlefolk but she also demonstrates an empathetic personality as she tries to put herself into the shoes of a new classmate. It was a chance remark of my husband's that gave me the idea for the first in the series, The Crossing Places. Brilliantly good fun for lovers of Malory Towers, this is a first class and suitably complicated mystery that will engage young readers and amuse older ones alike.
