About this deal

Despite Death to the Emperor being the first book I’ve read in the series, I never felt at a loss. The author provides sufficient detail about previous events to help make sense of things but not too much that you feel you’ve learned everything there is to know. Although this is my first introduction to Centurion Macro and Prefect Cato, I loved their partnership borne of mutual respect and a soldierly comradeship forged in the heat of battle. For much of the book, though, they find themselves apart, each wishing they had the other beside them for support and advice, and because of their complementary skills. Storytelling is as ever of a superb quality, its a fast-paced Roman adventure in Britannia, and where all characters come vividly to life to capture the reader from start to finish. Y las pierde en los personajes, flojitos. Y en la ambientación, flojita. Y en que la vida en la legión romana es una pincelada simplota y las batallas tres cuartos de lo mismo. Pero entretiene. This is a compelling first novel in what has turned into a long-running series. Scarrow's aim is to deliver Sharpe-style military thrills and spills in the Roman era, and his books focused around a central pairing of interesting characters: the weedy and scholarly Cato, young and inexperienced, and the battle-scarred and squat Macro, an experienced soldier. I immediately liked Macro and he soon became my favourite character, a simple soldier just trying to do his job.

The tales follow the life and careers of Centurion Lucius Cornelius Macro and Prefect Quintus Licinius Cato. It’s the year AD60 and both protagonists are once again in Britannia, tasked in maintaining Rome’s tenuous hold of the province. With the aim of attracting more readers, the publishers of the series had decided to drop the word Eagle from the title of the series in the year 2007. However, the idea seemed to be quite absurd and they decided to continue with the same title. If you find yourself looking for better accounts of ancient warfare there are quite a few good authors out there. Christian Cameron is the best, although all his ancient world series ( Tyrant, Long War, and Commander) are all set in the Greek world. For Rome you have Ben Kane's Eagles and Clash of Empires. I find Kane frustratingly uninterested in nonmilitary topics, but he does at least understand them. Preston Holtry's Arrius books are an often underlooked series. And Harry Sidebottom's Warrior of Rome books are what you get when you cross a gifted novelist with a genuine historian. All come highly recommended. The Roman army are made aware of Boudica leading a rebellion, where thousands of rebels are joining her to rid the country of the invading Romans. While just newly settled there, Macro and his family will be threatened and molested by rival gangleaders, Malvinus and Cinna, and to save Portia and the inn for the moment Macro and Petronella will flee to Camulodunum (Colchester) and settle there. Simon Scarrow is a British author of historical fictional novels. I will be sad when this series comes to an end and in this book we lose some great characters. But the good news for me is I have many unread books to get through in this series😉 Hearts of Stone (2015) – 1938. A perfect summer on the Greek island of Lefkas for three young people untroubled by the simmering politics of Europe. Peter, visiting from Germany while his father leads an archaeological dig, has become close friends with locals Andreas and Eleni. As the world slides towards conflict and Peter is forced to leave, they swear to meet again. He has also written another series,Revolution, focusing on WellingtonandNapoleon, whose first title,Young Bloods, was published in 2006. The second volume,The Generals, was released on 31 May 2007 and the third volumeFire and Swordwas released in January 2009. The fourth and final novel of the series was released in Jun 2010 and is calledThe Fields of Death. He began publishing a new series in 2011 titledGladiator. To me whilst this is a work of Historical fiction don’t be fooled into thinking I don’t read that genre so the book won’t be for me, it transcends that, revel in the quality of the writing and storytelling, engage with the characters and be prepared to take a glorious journey with two of the Romans finest and bravest Cato and MarcoBound together more by their hatred of Rome than anything else, the rebel tribes take brutal and bloody revenge on the Roman settlements they pass through. Whipped up into a religious frenzy by their Druids, their treatment of prisoners is especially cruel and merciless. Those who are squeamish may wish to skip a couple of the scenes. This is a sweeping novel, a novel for me which is all about the characters and the story. Simon Scarrow is a supreme storyteller

The audiobook was narrated by Jonathan Keeble. His performance was superb, flowing with the action be it military or more personal, investing emotion where needed and generally carrying the reader through the trials and tribulations of 'peaceful' retirement. And, of course, every protagonist is given a personal, unique voice (with, delightfully, the spy, Appolonius, sounding very much like Julian Clarey).

Audible . Retrieved 4 January 2020. They are first described as taking part in the battle in Germania and against the invasion of the Britishers by Claudius. In the later of the series, the two soldiers are described as serving in the Imperial Navy in the east of Italy.Claudius: Emperor of Rome, portrayed in The Eagle's Conquest and Praetorian as a forgetful, half-witted buffoon. Under the Eagle’ tells the story of Quintus Licinius Cato, who joins the notorious Second Legion in 42AD in the rough wilds of Germany facing the barbarian hoards. Yet having achieved precisely nothing here, they are sent out into an even more barbarous country: Britain. Yet their enemies are not just without, but also within as the Macchiavellian Narcissus, the Emperor’s freedman, appears to send them on a deadly mission that could well destroy them. The novel is set in AD43 and involves the heroes in our legion attempting to invade Britain. Behind the scenes there's plenty of murky political plotting going on, and Scarrow gets plenty of mileage out of the sinister machinications. Half the game is trying to figure out who bears what hidden allegiance and then seeing if you're right. It all gets rather complicated but not uninteresting.
