About this deal

Ryūjō 's aircraft also bombed the ports of Cocanada and Vizagapatam, causing relatively minor damage. Operation C aimed to destroy the British Eastern Fleet, and disrupt British lines of communications in the Bay of Bengal in support of the Burma Campaign.

you’ll almost certainly want this second instalment… it’ll be a shame if you don’t, especially as the subject is so fascinating and you can widen your modelling on the theme. I had thought I had at least a passing familiarity with all major naval ops in WWII, but this interesting read presented an interesting addition about something I had no significant knowledge of, the British fleet in the Indian Ocean. They damaged port facilities, sank one carrier and two cruisers, destroyed a third of enemy ground-based fighters and nearly all of the enemy ground-based strike aircraft. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Given the importance of the Indian Ocean trade and Imperial communications then surely the Eastern Fleet is not a Fleet In Being but to assure the “safe and timely arrival of the convoy” the main threat to this as ever was the Axis submarine and this problem was solved before the deployment of the Pacific Fleet. Carrier Division 2 did not immediately follow; it performed a series of kinking manoeuvres starting at 15:00 that initially took it northwest. At 17:00 he received signals intelligence (SIGINT) from Colombo reporting the Japanese course at 14:00 as southwesterly at 24 knots.

The American involvement was extended to capitalise on the success with a second attack, this time on Surabaya, eastern Java, on 17 May ( Operation Transom). Late on 2 April, the British retired toward Port T – 600 miles (970 km) southwest of Ceylon – to refuel. And what of the men of this Eastern Fleet who through the years endured heat and hardship, separation and routine and with little public recognition?

On 22 November 1944 the Eastern Fleet was re-designated East Indies fleet and continued to be based in Trincomalee. There are some adult themes, mostly political and little graphic violence, so this is a good book for the Junior Reader over about 11/12 year with maritime interests. The location and destruction of these German raiders consumed much British naval effort until the last raider – Michel – was sunk in October 1943. The Darkest Hour presents the Imperial Japanese Navy offensive in the Indian Ocean area in March–April 1942, the main goal of which was to destroy the Royal Navy in the Far East and achieve domination on the western flank of the Pacific War on the eve of the Battle of Midway. The second volume examines the Japanese aerial assault upon the British bases on Ceylon, and the attacks against the carrier HMS Hermes, cruisers MS Cornwall and Devonshire, and the destroyer HMAS Vampire.
