About this deal

There are four people from his past whom he thinks could be responsible - and Strike knows that any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. While there have been very tense moments with our characters being undercover in previous books, it's nothing to the extent of what happens here. JKR sure knows how to craft suspense, mostly by putting her characters through the wringer, and I am HERE for it.

I admit the possibility” – the words that somehow embody the spirit of human beings, irrespective of the kind of belief that drives you, irrespective of the fact that you can be an atheist or a skeptic, there comes a time in everyone’s life that you want to hold on to something, some kind of HOPE to live on. Laura Bradley, reviewing in The Daily Beast, wrote that there were "pernicious anti-trans tropes" [21] in the novel, while Jake Kerridge observed that the book's "moral seems to be: never trust a man in a dress". Halfway in, and the bulk of this hardcover has (somewhat predictably) exacted a physical toll on me. Slimeball as he is, it's never the likeliest suspects in these books who's the main villain, it's always a twist reveal. The atmospheric cover image shows Cormoran and Robin standing at the seaside, facing away to look at the ocean - and also giving very little away about what to expect from the plot! Will Edensor, one of the sons of a wealthy family, has joined a cult -- the Universal Humanitarian Church (UHC). While I am also a big fan of Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books and own them all, I have not found re-reading them to be as completely riveting as the “Cormoran Strike” series.

This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. In several chapters, he bemoans the fact that he’s on a joyless weight-loss journey but also deals with a host of female characters who lust after him while he juggles his feelings for Robin.I also chose the audio format again, which I knew would be brilliantly narrated by British actor Robert Glenister. In truth, the previous episode was even bigger – nearly fourteen hundred pages – and I'd loved that one, so I wasn’t daunted. I enjoy that Strike bases his decisions in part on whether they will increase the chances of Robin breaking up with her new boyfriend. Private Detective Cormoran Strike is contacted by a worried father whose son, Will, has gone to join a religious cult in the depths of the Norfolk countryside.

Rowling/Robert Galbraith’s is the only author who makes me drop all I am reading and most of what I am doing to read her latest installment. In this time she has discovered a number of extremely disturbing things about the operation of the church, and has undergone two sexual assaults, one violent. It reads blithely like Rowling describing herself because she founded children’s charity Lumos, and she has positioned herself as a champion of women’s rights and child protection. Ironic, literally running away from religion, but with the absolute blind certainty a savior is at the end waiting for you.

As you can see, there is an awful lot going on here, and quite a lot more besides, so this more than explains the 900+ page heft of this story.

In The Running Grave, Cormoran and Robin's romantic relationship appears to continue to be at an impasse as, through pure stubbornness at this point, Robin is now in a relationship with a police officer, Ryan Murphy, while Cormoran pursues a couple of meaningless encounters to distract him from his love for his work partner. He also manages to have a particularly ill-advised, and brief entanglement with a barrister named Bijou Watkins. This becomes an issue later when it becomes clear one of those competitors is out to cause the firm some significant trouble. In this novel lots of that detail is about the mechanism of cult memberships, so you can imagine there was a significant amount of time spent poring over accounts, and possibly even talking to survivors. There’s even a meme, which has been reclaimed by LGBTQ+ people online, mocking those with “blue hair and pronouns” – aka trans people and their allies.
