About this deal

Daphne du Maurier is one of my favorite authors and she has never disappointed me thus far. These five longish short stories, each with a different focus but all surprising and unpredictable or at least to me. I would like to thank my wonderful guests, George Bentley and Glenda Benevides, for putting up with my shenanigans and being on the show. We had a conversation that was both entertaining and meaningful. Hank jokes telling Abby that he is not sure that she isn’t the monster. This is said in jest but actually hints at the potential metaphorical meaning of the monster. We learn that Abby left to go to her college reunion. Hank worries that she was spending time with her ex boyfriend. This turns out to not be true. She had told Hank she wanted to go to the reunion. She had invited him but he refused. Hank seemingly has something of an inferiority complex. He didn’t want to have to dress up and interact with her old friends just to be looked down on. Hank remarks that that accounts for about 9 hours. What about the rest of the time? After Midnight – How Long Was Abby Gone?

Beauty: 3/3/3/2/3. Not the most elegant, but bits of striking imagery; nothing terribly bad beyond a bit of stiltedness. While contemporary writers were dealing critically with such subjects as the war, alienation, religion, poverty, Marxism, psychology and art, and experimenting with new techniques such as the stream of consciousness, du Maurier produced 'old-fashioned' novels with straightforward narratives that appealed to a popular audience's love of fantasy, adventure, sexuality and mystery. At an early age, she recognised that her readership was comprised principally of women, and she cultivated their loyal following through several decades by embodying their desires and dreams in her novels and short stories.

A word of caution: Do not confuse this book, Don't Look Now and Other Stories with Don't Look Now: Selected Stories of Daphne Du Maurier. They are not the same book. The only things they have in common are the the title story and the author. Both books are fine, mind you, but if you are participating in a group discussion and the stories you are reading aren't the same as what everyone else is reading, you will likely feel left out in the cold.

A married couple, John and Laura, are on holiday in Venice following the death of their young daughter. The story opens as they fear they are being followed by a pair of elderly twins: their joking about the sisters takes a more sinister turn when one approaches Laura and claims she can see the ghost of their daughter alongside them.
