About this deal

I enjoyed what it did with Batman at the start, but I’m definitely not a fan of how brutal it gets towards the end.

But then we get to a point where the National Guard comes in, and they are unable to stop homeless people who behave like a bunch of wild, out-of-control animals rather than actual people. Overall, this is possibly one of the greatest Batman stories of all time and deserves to remember as such. Despite its critics, The Cult is generally well-received by the fan base and has been in constant print since its original collection in 1991. Even the iconography is similar – the bodies strung up on the street lamps here evoke the bodies dangling from the bridge in The Dark Knight Rises. I was going to say the ending is rushed, and I feel like it is rushed, but just saying that didn’t feel like a complete assessment of the problem. As this happens, the Cult effectively takes over the city, causing the rest of the country to quarantine Gotham. Just in the start a little bit and they never really play the immortality angle and don't explain so thats a missed opportunity. Now, Batman will live in a mental prison that will make him see the world according to Blackfire’s words. I’ll admit that it’s been a while since I read it but, from what I remember, it was a good story that presented an interesting “what if” future for the DC universe. Under instructions from Blackfire, Batman opens fire with a machine-gun upon a man he believes to be Two-Face but ultimately turns out not to be.

But there's really no urgency at the end, Blackfire's not threatening to blow up the city, he's just sitting around waiting for Batman to show. Blackfire somehow manages to not only subdue Batman but also the Gotham Police Force, the National Guard, the United States Army - all through brainwashed homeless people! So much so, that he was kind of eager to kill him off in A Death in the Family, already convinced that readers would vote for Jason’s death. Also, if you haven’t already, make sure you read up for next week’s book, Batman: Dark Knight, Dark City !Batman gets kidnapped and brainwashed by a murderous cult, which then goes on to take over Gotham City. I feel like right now there is a special interest in cult-like communities that rapidly spin out of control and this storyline taps into that in a major way. One of the moments I enjoyed most with Batman after he’s escaped is how it takes Robin being overwhelmed for him to jump back into action, and even after he’s won he’s exhausted.
