About this deal

Private companies have also experienced conflict over this issue. KPMG is one of many large firms providing unconscious bias training to its employees, which it’s been rolling out since 2014. In an online meeting made public in February, KPMG’s UK chair, Bill Michael, called the concept of unconscious bias “complete and utter crap”, adding: “Because after every single unconscious bias training that has ever been done, nothing’s ever improved.” His comments (on Covid-19 as well as bias training) led to an outcry from staff and others, after which Michael apologised and resigned. Critical reading means being able to reflect on what a text says, what it describes and what it means by scrutinising the style and structure of the writing, the language used as well as the content.

On the other hand, people who don't exercise their grey matter stand a chance of losing brain power, says the study's primary author, Dr. Robert Freidland. One of my friends recommended I try doing this to improve my reading comprehension. I have been reading newspapers and magazines in English now for a couple of months and it has really helped. At first it took me a long time to read even one article, but my reading speed has increased a lot. Also, my vocabulary has improved a lot as I have learned so many new words. When I realized my ability to read was changing due to PTSD, I could approach the situation with a little more self-compassion. Instead of beating myself up, I could say, “There’s a logical explanation for this. It’s not an indictment of myself as a person.” In other words, if we don’t process trauma, we become so overwhelmed that we struggle to think, analyze, and empathize with the people and emotions we read about.

Reading improves vocabulary

But why exactly does trauma affect our ability to read? To understand that, we first have to understand trauma. Similarly, whenever you read a novel, you have to remember tons of information about the story's plot and subplots, the characters and their relationships, and the environment in which the story takes place. Be an active listener - not a sponge -try to connect what is being said to what you already know (this is where the preparation bit comes in handy!). Ask yourself, do I agree? How does it fit in with what I already knew? Am I surprised ? If not, why not? How did she get to that conclusion? Ifit's a completely newtopic, try to get a basic idea of what it's about beforehand - read an introductoryparagraph from a textbook or encyclopaedia, for instance. What you do before and after lectures can be as important as what you do during them. If you can anticipate the main points, you will find the lecture easier to understand, and you willhave a better idea ofwhen something is worth taking a note of. So:

All of this new information creates new memories. And every new memory creates synapses or strengthens old ones. Online journal articles, eBooks and documents often open as PDFs. You can annotate these directly on-screen, and save your annotated version. When we read well-written work, we naturally observe its writing style, cadence, and composition. These characteristics inevitably seep into our writing, in the same way that musicians are influenced by each other. Now you will be ready for the main activity of reading. This involves careful consideration of the meaning of what the author is trying to convey and involves being critical as well as active. RecallRe-think Reading! is a collection of lesson plans for teaching reading based on high quality texts.

I think most students that have done/do this would say that it is a good way to learn a foreign language.Being able to concentrate and focus for long periods is essential to our success and wellbeing. Cal Newport, the author of Deep Work, writes : Books provide some of the most engaging entertainment on the planet. As the author Stephen King said, "Books are a uniquely portable magic." Josh, a journalist and Bournemouth fan said: “A points deduction is not harsh if they have financially breached the rules and caused a number of teams to be relegated. However, the fact that Chelsea and Manchester City have not been punished makes the timing and awarding of this very harsh. Come the end of the season, I’m sure Everton will stay up anyway.”
