About this deal

It does work best when paired with another “big good guy set” like 71775 Nya’s Samurai X Mech, or even 71774 Lloyd’s Ultra Gold Dragon. I was very impressed by the visor – to mimic a Beekeper’s mesh mask, LEGO have opted for a translucent visor, which has a frosted glass effect that creates this brilliant blurry look on the minifgure’s face – the effect is really, really nice, and I would love for this not to be a once-off use of the glass effect.

The use of Tr. Bright Reddish Violet parts for the Vengestone baddies are a considerable departure from the "Hunted" sets, in which element-suppressing vengestone weapons were represented with Bright Orange and Tr. Bright Orange parts. But I definitely don't mind — it's a color that's never played quite so prominent a role in any previous faction's color scheme (even beyond the Ninjago theme), and one that definitely looks very cool and spooky in the context of this wave. And perhaps the titanium metallic body parts with orange mineral veins running through them are meant to help unify these differing portrayals. Here’s the completed model, which was a lot larger than I expected it to be. It has tremendous presence, and stands tall at 26 cm (10″), but at the same time has a width of 40cm (15.5″) thanks to his crystal wings. While the price might seem a little high, it’s not outrageous and out of reach, and firmly sits in the “big toy you get for birthdays or Christmas, or that you need to save up for a bit” category. The Crystal King’s chest is also cool, with great use of droid arms and horns for its ribs, which encases a crystal windscreen canopy. Final Thoughts: I was initially very apprehensive about LEGO’s decision to change the complete set of minifigures to 12 from 16, but after spending some time with Series 21 minifigures, I can see why.The villains are always the highlight of any new Ninjago wave, and this set is crawling with baddies. You get a Vengestone Guard, the Crystal King himself, a Vengestone warrior, and the return of fan favourite – Harumi! I spent a lot of my teenage years and early 20s playing Wacraft and Dota 2, so this particular design resonates strongly with me. This Ninja and villain battle playset makes a great birthday, Christmas or any-time gift for ninja heroes kids aged 9+ years old I really hope we get to the bottom of this, but in the meantime, the Classic Space geek in me is very happy that we have a refreshed Space Police 1 minifigure included in Series 21. The airplane is a large single-piece, which slots between her torso and legs. It also has studs on the front, and wings, which open up upgrade possibilities, as well as ensures that it looks like it belongs in the LEGO System.

It goes without saying that this is an utterly incredible minifigure, and I’m also sorely tempted to build an Aztec Army out of as many Ancient Warriors I can find. But let’s be frank – this Crystal King is simply no match for the OG 8692 Crystal King from Power Miners! This complex head is shared with the Vengestone Warrior, although their torsos and armour differ. The warrior's pearl dark grey armour remains substantially intact, whereas the guard's chest and arms are exposed. The resulting blend of pink shades looks excellent and complements an intricate shoulder armour piece, identifying the Vengestone Guard among the Crystal King's minions. New Aliens are always a lot of fun, and I really need to credit LEGO for designing and producing a brand new alien species in Series 21! Series 21’s Alien minifigure is unlike any other alien design we’ve seen, which is really cool. He’s wearing a bright orange jumpsuit, which at first, just screamed space-prisoner jumpsuit! The Hermit Crab is a great new addition to my LEGO animal menagerie, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want at least a dozen more of them.

A very worthy addition to the LEGO Animal Costume Minifigures, and I can’t wait to get home to get an updated photo of the lineup with the Pug Costume Guy added! Access to the Captain's Cabin - complete with bed, mirror, chair, and fireplace - lets Caspian, Lucy, and Edmund get away from the hard work of sailing a ship! Ninjago doesn’t do big bad villain sets all that well, but this is an uncommon example, where it gets most of it right, and you’re left with an awesome crystal centaur beast, that’s piloted by the Crystal King himself – the perfect foil to the Ninja’s mechs, vehicles and dragons. Special thanks to LEGO Certified Stores ANZ for supporting this review. Look out for a giveaway to win a complete set of Series 21 minifigures soon! The honeycomb tile with two bees printed on it are sublime as well, and I can see this being a really useful tile. I can’t wait for someone to create a massive beehive out with dozens of these tiles. The minifigures for 71772 The Crystal King are particularly strong – you get a nice helping of bad guys, and a cool Lloyd variant. Lloyd in particular will be a treat for Ninjago fans, as he’s the “mascot” depicted on the box art, and this set is the only one which has him in his green Ninja outfit in the wave. With carefree side-swept hair, and a pensive look, the Violin Kid gives off this air of youthful nervousness, probably as he psyches himself up for a recital or concert.
