Drop down to standard definition and praise is, of course, more qualified; but the G2 does well with what it’s given. Edge definition of objects isn’t the strongest, a segment during Jeremy Vine reveals jagged edges to a monitor screen, and while sharpness and detail levels drop, colours are portrayed in a convincing manner. Problems with the OLED65G2’s pictures are as rare as hen’s teeth. Oddly our sample showed signs of mild shadow detail loss and brightness fluctuations in Dolby Atmos mode that didn’t show up in regular HDR10 mode.
While the G2 OLED delivers consistently better picture quality than the improved midrange LG OLEDC2s, if money’s tight you may feel the extent of the difference isn’t enough to justify the price difference - we certainly wouldn't blame you. Motion handling is also much more sophisticated, with both LG’s Cinematic Movement and default Natural motion settings now able to gently massage away excess judder while generating far fewer distracting unwanted processing ‘glitches’. The G2 OLED’s ultra-slim design and supplied flush-fit mount make it unusually well-suited to wall mounting. Don't buy it if... Just be careful: the G2 only ships with a wall mount, with the optional desktop mount adding hundreds more to the asking price. The OLED65G2 is easily LG’s best OLED TV yet. Its sound is a solid improvement over LG’s 2021 built-in audio, while the extra brightness it achieves thanks to its new heat sink and accompanying new processor delivers nothing but positives, enriching everything from basic HD SDR to sparkling 4K HDR and the finest graphical wares of the latest gaming consoles and PCs. All without anything looking forced or like ‘brightness for brightness sake’.
Significantly More Luminous
Although it’s still not up there with the best TV sound performers, the G2 OLED is a handy improvement sonically over the past few LG TV generations. Freeview uses HbbTV technology which combines broadcast & internet streaming. Data usage charges & conditions apply. The G2 is optimized for wall-hanging, coming with a slim-fit wall mount in the box, meaning you don't have to buy one of the best TV wall mounts. But, if you’re thinking of plonking - or rather, very carefully placing - the G2 on a piece of furniture, it's worth noting that LG’s robust, centrally mounted stand option costs extra. Though, it’s nice to find that LG has at least done a proper design job on it this year - no more are you expected to make do with a couple of spindly legs like you had to with 2021’s G1s. Beneath that is the Trending Now bar, app list, a row of physical/digital inputs and smart connections, live TV and Now Streaming; the latter collates content from iPlayer, Apple TV, All 4, YouTube, Rakuten TV and ITV Hub. I prefer this approach over 2021’s webOS, since it’s more focused instead of serving content from every app, which I found overwhelming.
LG’s new Alpha 9 Gen 5 process delivers a few extra improvements to LG’s picture quality for good measure. Upscaling of sub-4K sources is much better, for one thing. LG has actually removed a step from its upscaling system after finding that it could add noise to upscaled pictures, and the results really do look remarkably more polished and sharp. Despite the new intensity extremes the OLED65G2 hits by LG OLED standards, the newly ramped up HDR highlights typically avoid clipping - that is, the loss of subtle shading details. In fact, it suffers less with clipping than any other LG OLED TV to date.

Both of these brightness advantages make images look richer and more expressive, which in turn enhances their sense of depth/three-dimensional space. The benefits of the extra brightness aren’t just visible from time to time, either; you can feel them in almost every frame of an HDR source, be it a naturalistically shot daylight interior or a dramatically lit neon-drenched night-time exterior.
Particularly pleasing is how much more dynamic the sound appears when running in Dolby Atmos mode. LG’s TVs have had a habit for a while now of sounding strangely reined-in and lifeless with Dolby Atmos mixes, leaving us much preferring LG’s more powerful and dynamic AI Sound mode. On the OLED65G2, though, Dolby Atmos no longer sounds like the poor relation. It’s almost like someone has turned on a tap of extra power compared with last year’s G1 audio, enabling Dolby Atmos mixes to create a wider soundstage that contains clearer, more accurately positioned effects and which is underpinned by more potent mid range and bass.
