About this deal

The details state that they’ve been dipped in paraffin wax, which you can see as they are reasonably dense and stay together well. Just don’t crush them too much (obvious, I know but worth drawing attention to) as they will crumble slightly and could come apart. You also don’t need many to get a fire started – three or four would be fine depending on how big your fire/bbq is – also factor damp – yes these will even burn strong enough for charcoal that you’ve let get damp – somehow on my Uniflame charcoal bbq the charcoal got damp in the cupboard under the grill, and these still got the charcoal going!. So great value for money and a genuine practical product – I have done my best to state the negatives, there just aren’t many. It’s a real step up from the nasty paraffin firelighters that are white and make your hands stink! Here’s what happens when you put a few in a bundle and place a bbq starter full of big lumpwood charcoal on top in about 5 minutes: Hopefully, this procedure has shown you how easy it is to make some homemade firestarters with sawdust and wax. Just remember almost any flammable object can be used in place of the sawdust. You can experiment with paper shavings, cotton, cardboard, twine, laundry lint, and rope. A recommendation service that carefully researches each product and consults with experts across many disciplines. The biggest problem is how many firelighter bundles you need. Push all your charcoal into a pile if you don’t have a bbq starter and pile it as has as possible. This gives you the best chance of the flame filtering it’s way through and catching light to your charcoal. Here’s an example in a bbq starter of how effective these firelighters are when charcoal is piled high and there is plenty of air circulation: My bbq chimney starter in use: Eco firelighters work best when the charcoal is piled high and there is plenty of air circulation Materials are good for environment

Since we are trying to avoid fossil fuel derived products wherever possible, we avoid using paraffin wax and make candles(and firelighters) using natural beeswax.Pour melted wax over them. Carefully pour a small amount of melted candle wax over each tea bag, using just enough wax to cover the bag or the leaves. Of course, such options are not sustainable and carry a huge CO2 cost, contributing to global warming. From opening the box, they seem bigger than average which is great so you only need one or two to start a fire. The one thing I’d note is that they are all slightly different sizes but that isn’t really an issue as even the smaller ones are still a very decent size.

The video shown below is our ice cube firestarter and how it resists wind as well as the strength of the flame. It is burning inside our home wall firepit. Really happy with these – as you can see in the video they just go. There’s no trouble getting a fire alight and keeping it that way – a little smoke off the bat but you get that with all charcoal bbq’s!

Plastic ice cube trays or larger metal cupcake trays depending on the firestarter size you would like to make. Once you’ve added a pallet to your basket, you will see a green information bar at the top of this box, telling you the weight you can still add. Once you have melted your wax, it is time to add it to the tinder materials, or to add the tinder materials to it. Forming Your Firelighters There are no hard and fast rules about how you should combine the wax and tinder materials to form your firelighters, and a number of different options that you could choose. Pour the melted wax into the metal teapot. Then gently strain it into the low-heat saucepan, before leaving it to cool for a bit.

What we used for our homemade firelighters

While much of the wood chip is used throughout the garden and orchard areas, we also use some of it to make firelighters. We also make use of the sawdust generated by processing the firewood that is delivered. AS SEEN ON BBC COUNTRYFILE’S CHRISTMAS SHOW 2021 Sarah had a lot of fun with the BBC crew showing Charlotte Smith just how to make our very popular Natural Wax Firelighters. Far fewer people have newspapers delivered, or buy them on a regular basis. So this option might not be open to you.
