About this deal

This water-based all-purpose cleaner (APC) is a degreaser that has been developed to be diluted to suit pretty much any automotive surface you can think of including paintwork, plastics, trim pieces and interior fabrics. Dilutable down to 1:1000 for light duties or able to be used neat for heavy decontamination we decided to put it through its paces on three varied parts of a car. APCs are not known for their foaming ability so this is a nice bonus to me.It has a recommended ratio is 20 to 1 for most cases such as tires/wheels and wheel wells. Surfex HD is recommended for all arduous automotive, commercial and domestic cleaning duties. It can be used on exterior and interior surfaces, paint, alloy wheels, tyres, fabric, carpets and most surfaces. Spot tests are always advisable.

However, it has been difficult to match the performance of the solvent-containing systems and increasing environmental restrictions on the ranges of acceptable water-based actives have further tested the formulators’ ability. Using water-based degreasers allows the adjustment of strength to suit the job. Surfex-HD can be added to water at just 0.5% to form an effective cleaner for light application and increased in strength to neat if required for heavy industrial applications. So, firstly, am I risking the finish on either the car or the bike using sprayed on, diluted Surfex-HD, a soft brush, and a hose? Can an APC work as a sort of shampoo??? The good news is that it’s biodegradable and solvent-free so it’s less likely to cause staining and discoloration to fabrics and plastic. It can be diluted with water. Most pro detailers say that an All-Purpose Cleaner should really be called a Multi-Purpose Cleaner. That’s because you can’t do absolutely everything with it. More on that later.

Old kerosene-based degreasers are particularly nasty to pretty much anything living. As water-based options are far better at removing grease, there’s no real need to rely on these solvent-based options anymore. In the past I've always cleaned my motorcycles with a product called SDoc 100 gel. You spray it on, agitate it with a brush, leave it a few minutes and then hose it off. Add in the occasional coat of Meguiars wax and some Hot Rims for the wheels and it's done. Some plastic parts can be kept tidy using interior cleaning products, but only a degreaser can remove the really oily bits. As with everything from your fuel type to your food, the drive to become more considerate of the environment has led to more biodegradable cleaners hit the market. The big question then, is can they stand up to the conventional solvents? We took the best degreasers for sale here in the UK (some environmentally conscious, some less so) and put them to the test.

It can be adjusted in strength to suit every given application, remaining active at levels of just 1:200 in water for light work, or use neat for extreme duty work. Rinse the tyres: Use a water hose or pressure washer to rinse off loose dirt, mud, and debris thoroughly. This initial rinse will make the cleaning process more effective. The little display screens in modern cars can get stained by an APC so it’s best not to use it here. Surfex HD is a water-based degreaser, at higher dilution ratios it can take on serious cleaning tasks. When cleaning engine bays I use Surfex at a dilution ratio of 20% and agitate with a detail brush, which can clean very dirty plastics and components. I use it to clean any oil spills on the plastic components and it cleans up well.
