About this deal

While the TG-6's rugged specs are very impressive, when it comes to going underwater, several of its peers can go quite a bit deeper, with the Nikon Coolpix W300 (arguably the TG-6's closest competitor) able to function down to 30 meters (100 feet). If you're a snorkeler, that's no big deal, but for scuba it's a very desirable trait. Characterised by its exceedingly durable design, the red Tough TG-6 from Olympus is a sleek point-and-shoot capable of handling a wide variety of adventures. Featuring a 12MP BSI CMOS sensor and TruePic VIII image processor, the TG-6 offers notable image clarity and low-light performance to ISO 12800, along with fast 20-fps continuous shooting, 4K30p video recording, and high-speed Full HD 1080p shooting at 120 fps. Complementing the shooting capabilities is a versatile 4x optical zoom lens, which spans a 25-100mm equivalent range, and has an f/2 maximum aperture to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions.

I want a certain amount of control over ISO, aperture and shutter speed because I understand how they affect my photo. But I don’t want to overthink these settings and miss the beauty of the moment.

But when I leave my cameras lying around, my wife doesn’t like the clutter (even though she loves the photos that result from the clutter). The TG-6 has a reasonably chunky small grip protruding from the body of the camera which helps you keep a good hold of it - especially if you’re using it underwater or with gloves. The TG-6 is now discontinued and has been replaced by the upgraded TG-7 version which will be supplied instead. The most famous photographs were made with cameras that we would consider inferior by today’s standards. A beautiful photograph transcends the technology it was made with. You no longer need to be nervous around the water with your camera – the TG-6 is completely waterproof and pulls you right in. A good motivator

Suppose you want to capture a silky waterfall photo. Normally, you need control over your shutter speed to make it go slow enough to capture the motion. But with the TG-6 you don’t have control over the shutter speed. The thing is, the TOUGH range was already well ahead of the competition in terms of its physical features as well as its numerous shooting modes. It’s waterproof to a depth of 15 metres, freezeproof to -10C, can withstand a crushing force of 100Kg and a drop from 2.1m, and is dustproof. Its built-in environmental sensors include GPS, a manometer for altitude and depth measurement, an electronic compass, and an external thermometer for measuring air and water temperature. When the mode dial is already set to (Microscope mode), press the arrow pad Left button to select other sub modes. We understand this can sometimes be difficult with work commitments, but we will do our best to accommodateyour needs.

If there’s one area of the compact camera market that has remained resilient against the threat of smartphones, it’s the rugged or “tough” sector. These cameras can go with you to places that your smartphone would surely perish in, giving you scope to shoot all your adventures - or just day trips to the beach. All of the above suggests not only a useful camera for taking shots in situations that you might feel are too risky for your smartphone, but the Olympus Tough TG-6 is also a capable travel camera, with the ability to shoot Raw files as well as the standard JPEGs. The reason why so many people are excited about the Olympus Tough TG-6 is the impressive list of technical specs. Underwater mode enables you to take underwater pictures in appropriate settings by selecting a sub mode best suited for the subject or scene. The TG-6 camera is waterproof up to depths of 15 meters without a separate sold underwater housing. Tough cameras, Oly and other brands, show mushy details that look really bad even without enlarging, specially in foliage and other fine structures. It’s worth pointing out the GPS switch at the top of the Olympus TG-6. This can either be set to “off” or “log”. In the latter setting, the camera will be continuously monitoring its position - even when switched off. If you need to conserve battery, you might want to consider turning this off.

The TG-6 has become our dedicated “leave it laying around the house” camera. It’s so small that it doesn’t bother my wife. It’s there when we need it. And, it’s so tough we don’t mind the kids using it. My solution was to keep using iPhones 8/8+ for most situations and a GoPro Hero5 for those moments when using the iPhone could be dangerous. New to the Tough TG-6 are a slew of high-speed recording modes for video. In addition to being able to shoot 4K video at 30fps, it can also record 1080p up to 120fps, 720p at 240fps and 360p at 480fps. While the Finepix XP140 can now shoot 4K video, the 15fps frame rate makes it virtually unusable, so for most subjects you’re going to be using its 1080/50/60p mode. It also has some slow motion high frame rate modes, but none at full HD resolution.

My kids and I discovered a stream filled with salmon. I knew it was the perfect chance to try out the TG-6 underwater. The irony is that I had an underwater case for my x100s. But it’s so clumsy to use in the case that it hinders my photography. Don’t forget that a camera only has to be so good and then the rest is up to you. The world’s greatest camera isn’t much good in the hands of a person that knows nothing about light, moment, or composition. Look for a camera that meets your general needs, then up your game as a photographer. It is captivating to suddenly see the world through a magnifying glass or microscope – to see tiny details blown up big. You may not be able to shrink yourself, but you can enter the micro world with the Olympus Tough TG-6. Microscope mode My guess is that most people aren’t too concerned with the numbers when it comes to the depth you can dive to with these kinds of cameras (and if they are they’ll probably be looking at the PT-059 underwater housing). So the fact that the TG-6 can dive to 15 Metres, compared with 25 metres for the Finepix XP140 and 10 metres for the COOLPIX W150 won’t be a dealbreaker.
