About this deal

Few units in the Space Marine roster are as big and powerful as a Land Raider, but the Primarch of the Ultramarines certainly fits in that category. Roboute Guilliman is as tough as a tank and twice as deadly, even before we factor in his superhuman spreadsheet skills.

This iconic Ultramarines story is now coming to audiobook format, perfect for listening to while you paint the valiant Space Marines from the upcoming Leviathan box set. The Imperium’s Sword: Re-roll charges, and get +1S/A when you charge or make a Heroic Intervention. A fantastic trait – the Strength thing is mildly less relevant now because of how weapon modifiers work in 9th, but it’s still very good. ANote that Centurions used to always Rapid Fire as per point 3, but are now completely exempted from Bolter Discipline and can’t benefit from it at all – they Rapid Fire like any other unit. Dreadnoughts also lost the capability, which mostly doesn’t matter but is a bit of a shame for the Ironclad which briefly had at least some argument to mount its hurricane bolter. The Adeptus Astartes are well known for their ability to face any foe that the 41st Millennium can throw at them. From their twisted brothers and armoured and alien battlesuits to hordes of muscled fungal hooligans , there’s a Codex-approved weapons solution for just about any foe imaginable. Darren – Miniatures Design Lead: As far as the Terminators go, we had the original design by Jes Goodwin, and that was a big influence on the five new miniatures in the Leviathan boxed set . The job of designing the multi-build kit was then passed to me, so I had a lot to work from, and we had to think of all the things people would want – it always baffled us that the Sergeant couldn’t be armed with a power fist, for example. Unlike almost everything else in the Army Rules section, the stratagems are not a simple roll-forward of content from the previous books with some minor tweaking around the edges. A few of them have survived, either wholly or in name only, but a huge swathe of these are completely new to the 9th edition codex. Stratagems now have categories, too, which don’t seem to actually do much right now, though Commander Dante in the Blood Angels index can use an Epic Deed for free if he wants to and presumably more of that kind of thing will be rolling out. Skilled Riders – 1CP –When your opponent shoots a BIKER, LAND SPEEDER, or STORM SPEEDER unit that Advanced in your turn, make them -1 to hit until the end of the phase. It’s ok but a serious downgrade, and requiring you to advance to use it is rough for a lot of chapters for what you get now. B-

WarCom: Did any unique challenges arise when designing new miniatures for a range as visually consistent as the Space Marines? Codex Warfare is dogshit with far too many strings attached. Firstly your opponent needs to have 13+ units on the table to begin with, and then you need to kill precisely 3 on turn 1 (Adaptive Strategy doesn’t help you here as the requirement is what your army is in), and then you need to kill units with precisely the right weapon type at each stage. Your capacity to miss kills with the right weapon type is just too great for this to be any good, especially with the timing restriction in place as well. While we haven’t seen Clotticus in physical model form just yet, he has been spotted in Hobby Japan’s August 2019 issue. He’s going to be the standard-bearer of the bunch and also come with a helmeted/helmetless option. Commanding Oratory – 2CP –Use at the start of any phase other than your Command phase. One CHAPLAIN that has not recited a litany this turn can automatically recite one that hasn’t already been recited by a friendly model this turn. It does this automatically with no roll, and takes effect until the start of your next Command phase. A solid stratagem in its own right, and even better for a Wise Orator Master of Sanctity who can use it for 1CP. It’s not just great because you can auto-chant one, but also because it allows you huge flexibility in using Chaplain litanies in situations you simply couldn’t before. A

The new Masters of the Chapter, as per Warhammer Community. After a short controversy these points ended up being the correct ones. Chapter Master Well, as you can see, nothing is different, and there isn’t even any Blood Angels iconography on the models. Well, other than the decals the painting team threw on. So while they are red plastic, they are identical to the set put out basically five years ago… Oh well, if you want them, they’ll be up for sale soon. Space Marines Heroes Series I (2018) These are bad and you should not take them. The redheaded step-child of Space Marine units, they just don’t offer enough of anything to be worth consideration, and the things that might have made them worth at least a second look in 9th ed are now more capably done by the Reiver LT. Aggressor Squad You can alternatively take a Terminator Captain. The Cataphractii datasheet from the previous book seems to have disappeared entirely from this one and is presumably meant to now be represented by the generic Terminator, which gains a few options to represent this. The Terminator loses an inch of movement but gains +1W and a 2+ save. WarCom: What goes into creating multi-build units like the Terminators and Sternguard Veterans, which were previously available as single-pose miniatures?

Standard of the Emperor Ascendant: +3″ to the Astartes Banner ability for an Ancient, and re-roll Morale for CORE within that range. A neat replacement for the old ATSKNF effect, but nothing to write home about. C+

This hero has a flail of corruption, a notably popular weapon option in Killteam, making him a perfect fit for those lists. All Models Spotted Space Marines are the iconic faction of Warhammer 40,000. The very origins of the setting lie with the Space Marines, beginning with the C100 release which existed prior to Rogue Trader, and then the iconic RTB01 Imperial Space Marines box which did so much to define the early look of 40k. There are very few 40k players who have never painted a Space Marine, and they remain the best-selling and most popular faction by a long way. Uncompromising Fire – 2CP –One INFANTRY unit in your army that is performing an action can shoot without that action failing. Very handy for something like Deploy Scramblers, where you might want to deep strike a unit in and be able to shoot something and still do the action. B+ Lead his Company in battle against the Empyrion's Blight Warband in the Sargassion Reach, alongside the Brazen Minotaurs Company of Captain Daed.

As ever, this strategy article is fixed in a specific time and place, and may be subject to change as the meta continues to evolve and new releases bring different armies up and down in power and relevance. The article was last updated in November 2022.Space Marines are the undisputed poster boys of Warhammer 40,000. They’re the mightiest warriors Humanity can offer, further augmented by ancient gene-science to forge perfect soldiers clad in formidable armour. The result is the Space Marine Chapters – each an elite cadre of the toughest, fastest, and most ruthless warriors the galaxy has ever seen. Did not pay his honour debt to Zarghan Ironfist and in retaliation, Zarghan launched a surprise raid on Vilius's palace and crucified all of the Captain's pleasure-slaves. The exception to “showing up in lists” is the Heavy Intercessor Squad, but the reason is just as likely to be “because you can’t actually buy them yet” as anything else. At time of writing the codex has been out for about two months, and as yet these have neither come out nor even have a definite release date. It is very Games Workshop to have a core unit just not be available to buy because some marketing genius decided they were going to use it to promote a Kill Team box in March or something equally ridiculous. In the last year or so of 8th edition, Marines were very strong, particularly when using the Iron Hands and Raven Guard Chapter rules. This continued even after a number of significant FAQs, and the transition to 9th edition didn’t slow them down at all – although the previously unfavoured Salamanders became the top chapter, gaining significant upside from the 9th ed missions and rules as well as new units introduced in the Indomitus box. There’ll be more Space Marine Heroes to come in the future – this is just Set 1.* Sign up for our newsletter to get any blind box news sent straight to your inbox.
