About this deal

According to Acclaimed Music, Appetite for Destruction is the 63rd most ranked record on critics' all-time lists. [54] Billy White Jr's design for a GNR tattoo that later ended up as the cover for Appetite For Destruction. Geffen's president Eddie Rosenblatt told the LA Times that the band saw the artwork as "a symbolic social statement, with the robot representing the industrial system that's raping and polluting our environment". At this point the choice fell on a work by the painter Robert Williams, entitled precisely Appetite for Destruction. From here, in fact, the band would take the name for its album. The chosen design is placed in a kind of futuristic world and represents a monstrous looking automaton attempting to rape a half-passed out woman, until some sort of alien monster rushes to save her. The band knew it was a ' extremely provocative work, which would have caused a sensation.

However, after several months of lobbying the network, Geffen general manager Al Coury convinced MTV to play the video just once a night for three nights. [25] "Welcome to the Jungle" became the most requested video on the network, and Coury pitched this success to radio stations, whom he sent promo copies of "Welcome to the Jungle", " Paradise City", and " Sweet Child o' Mine". [25]

With the radio and video airplay, as well as the band's touring, Appetite for Destruction managed to top the Billboard 200 on August 6, 1988, over a year after it was released. [26] [25] It spent four non-consecutive weeks at number one [27] and a total of 147 weeks on the chart. [28] Slash recalled: "We thought we'd made a record that might do as well as, say, Motörhead. It was totally uncommercial. It took a year for it to even get on the charts. No one wanted to know about it." [29] Schweizer Jahreshitparade 1989". hitparade.ch.
