Part of Osman’s appeal is how familiar he is willing to be, whether to his readers, viewers or Twitter followers. It's clear that she feels like she has to put on a mask everyday to be the diligent wife to her husband, and feels quite isolated, losing pieces of herself along the way. Writing style Gary is not the only character from The Satsuma Complex who talks like Mortimer, because – with very few exceptions – they all do. Main character The story is told from the perspective of all four characters, although the main one is Grace, a woman approaching her 90th birthday with the same energy that most approach their 30th. In interviews, Giedroyc has spoken of her desire to turn The Best Things into a “Leatherhead Trilogy”.

The chapters about Mia’s awful workplace are much more compelling than the ones where she stops washing and pretends to be a cat. I also got the feeling that she also thought she somehow wasn’t worthy of peoples friendship or love and even though she’s married, Mia is obviously lonely. Nobody, because either you already own a copy or you’re destined to get three or four for Christmas in a few weeks. Since then, she’s presented several documentaries covering everything from attitudes to pregnancy and childbirth to polyamory in the USA and breast cancer.Labouring with me as I prepared to leave for hospital with my first, then sitting quietly on the floor as I delivered our second at home on our bed. The first year I lived in LA was hard, and I didn’t know many people so finding new friends felt very forced. That said, Gary is described as having a slightly larger nose than Mortimer, so they are definitely different people. She does it as a release from her less than joyous life, and it soon becomes clear she loves her cat more than her husband, Tristan – a man whose bitchy ex-wife Belinda is constantly invading their space, and who doesn’t share her fondness for felines. There are no big literary flourishes, no sense that Osman is reaching for something beyond his grasp.

She tends to base her books in the UK, although she’ll be writing another novel next year, set for the the first time in LA. If Mortimer had written a terse thriller where everyone talks like a Hemingway character, it would have alienated his entire fanbase.

While her actor husband is recognised a lot, O’Porter, who also has a vintage clothing range with Joanie Clothing, is happy to remain out of the showbiz spotlight. I have lost people in my life and sadly know grief and its vicious claws very well, but Lilu dying was different.

Mia is a completely relatable character, especially with her truly happy state being at home with her cat.The first half is a bit of a slow build up, with some really random descriptions that feel a bit forced, but they are a quick way to characterise Mia, the main protagonist.
