About this deal

Sharing the load across these locations helps to minimise the clamping force required, and the rubber protection means your frame is safe from damage or scratching. The legs (with attached footrests) of the Shotgun Pro are height-adjustable so accommodate the length of your child’s legs. Our 42.5″ rider had the legs set to their maximum length, while our 33″ rider had them set to their shortest length. If you find an item at a lower price with another commercial internet retailer, you will receive it from us at the same price, provided the conditions listed in the link are met. Although on my mountain bike it’s not an issue as I can sit taller. Her weight is arguably well placed in that it’s between the wheels; much better than behind the rear wheel as on other styles of seats.

Today we’re taking a closer look at the all-new Shotgun Pro MTB Child Seat from biker-owned brand ‘Kids Ride Shotgun’ who are a small team of mountain bike parents from the North Island of New Zealand who came together with a global vision to raise the next generation of mountain bikers. There is plenty of adjustment available to suit different frame sizes and it all clamps snuggly and securely. Getting going! The Shotgun Pro seat is suitable for dropper posts and all common seat post sizes, including 27.2mm, 30.9mm, 31.6mm and 34.9mm. Fitting requires 14mm of available seat post space. The footrests attached to the legs are like mini MTB pedals with grip to keep kids feet in place better. The height at which the adult rider’s seat post is positioned also plays a role in the comfort level of the riders. In most cases, the higher the adult seat is set on the bike, the more room the adult rider will have. The Mac Ride mounts between the headset and the seat post, so the seat’s placement is independent of the slope of the top tube. However, with bikes with deeply sloped top tubes or step-through frames, it eliminates your ability to step through the frame.

How to take your young child on your bike when they’re not old enough to pedal themselves has long been a problem for many parents, especially if you want to get out on the mountain biking trails. You can leave them behind, but it’s great to think you could share your passion for MTB with your child from a young age. What we all need is a way to be able to take your child on your mountain bike with you! Another benefit of the Shotgun is the optional mini handlebars for kids (shown in the pic above). Some kids love having their own handlebars as it gives them their own place to hang on, while also keeping their hands off your grips.

Take for example, TWT Mom Carrie and her husband Brian. Carrie is 5’10 and Brian is 6’1. Their daughter is 3.5-years-old and 42.5″ tall (and 43 pounds). For reference, Carrie has quite a long torso! Foot peg Settings: The Original Shotgun has only one setting for the foot pegs where kids rest their feet. The 2.0 has two settings so that the foot pegs can be adjusted lower as your child grows. While bike trailers cocoon a child within a covered metal frame, are much closer to the ground, and are designed to stay upright when your bike falls to the side, kids are much more exposed in a child bike seat. The shotgun seat doesn't fit e-mtb's because of the variance between the top tube and the down tube being too great. We have had a handful of customers who have modified their shotgun seat to fit their e-mtb, but that's not something we can recommend. Can I use the shotgun seat on my carbon frame?

As a small but significant bonus, the legs are surrounded in a rubber sleeve to protect the frame of your bike. The Mac Ride doesn’t have frame protectors on its legs and we did ding our frame once as a result. The most important thing is that the bike seat is attached securely with no sign of budging. Common sense also comes into play here and, as parents, we’ll need to make judgement calls about what’s safe for our children. For example, how comfortable is your little one wearing a helmet? (No helmet, no bike ride.) So ensure your child is snug in their harness and that the bike seat itself is installed correctly and not wobbly. What safety standards should I be aware of? It’s important to know that the saddle of the Kids Ride Shotgun Pro can be adjusted along the rail to move your child closer or farther away from you. Because the seat rail is at an angle, moving the seat closer to the adult’s handlebars raises the saddle higher, while moving the seat closer to the adult lowers the saddle.

What age are front bike seats suitable from?

Headset (Replacing Spacer): Because you have to replace one of your bike’s headset spacers with the Shotgun Pro spacer, you’ll need 10mm of headset spacers that can be removed. If you’re planning on introducing your little one to the trails, the Shotgun seat is a solid and affordable bet. Mountain bike frames come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and the Shotgun seat will likely fit them all (unless it’s an ebike!). It can even be adjusted to fit bikes with wider tubing. The Do Little’s footrest is a fixed metal bar that cannot be adjusted. The “loose” design of the Do Little’s footrest is to allow the child’s foot to easily be released from the footrest in the event of a crash. Do Little’s belief is that it is better to have the child easily separated from the bike versus potentially having their leg or foot tweaked by the footrest. The size of the adult rider should also be taken into account when buying an open-style front child bike seat. A taller and/or larger-framed adult on a large size bike will always have more space and likely be more comfortable using these types of seats compared to a smaller adult on a smaller bike.

The best bike child seats are a great investment for parents and children who love to cycle, as well as for those who are just getting started. And having your child in close proximity as they learn to ride is a great way to bond with them. The process with the original Shotgun takes only a few minutes and several steps, but was just inconvenient enough that it made us less likely to want to take the MTB seat off our bike. With the Shotgun Pro, the process is so fast, there is really no inconvenience at all. Slightly less room required on your seat post for the rear clamp (can make a difference if you ride with your dropper post seal cap next to your seat collar) The MTB child seat should be as light as possible as you will have to move that extra 15 kg + of seat and baby up each hill! Don’t forget to put extra pressure in your suspension or dial in more low-speed-compression to compensate or your bike will handle poorly. A bike seat can fit a child from around nine months old, although the more adventurous parents among you might even use them for children as little as six months old. Taking a bike ride with your little one can be an adventure, whether you live in a city or have countryside views. What types of child bike seats are there?

Getting going!

The seat is made from smooth, soft rubber, and has soft shoulder padding too. It’s very ergonomic and fits our two-year-old toddler comfortably. It also has a minimalistic, modern design, with an integrated drainage system for rainwater, and comes in nine beautiful colours (the Chigusa green special edition is particularly lovely). We love that the entire seat detaches from the base which is fitted to the bicycle: a convenient feature for when you want to store it away. The shotgun seat is designed for kids 2 - 5 years old, and fits all mountain bikes – including bikes with steep, sloping or tapered top tubes. It's even suitable for carbon frames.
