Movie posters for The Good Dinosaur (listed here as The Good Element) and Partly Cloudy appear outside the Alkali Theater. Pixar Animation Studios is known for its attention to detail. Helping to find that magic in the details for “Elemental” was graphics art director Laura Meyer. Meyer was responsible for creating all things graphic for the film—"anything with letters on it,” she says. The film offered ample opportunity to have fun with the graphics—in fact, director Peter Sohn specifically requested funny, punny graphics. “He has such an amazing sense of humor,” says Meyer, who created what she calls a “homegrown” look. “I used very few typefaces straight out of the box—I did most by hand. Also there was the obligatory time jumping, we presume from a creative writing course and the latter conversations use the term "lambie" too often for my liking. Meggie’s story is told in a series of journals that move through the elements: Water from 1891-1905, Air from 1905-1909 and Earth from 1910-1932. The tale is beautifully told, rich with Doric, Scottish and Shetland dialect that’s so pervasive you’ll be using it, aye, in your own speech as you fall into the rhythms of its cadences. The writing is also full of the detail of its historical setting. The images are harsh and beautiful, from the cold wind biting through hand knitted clothing and salt dried skin, to gorse and multi-coloured flowers on cliff faces full of puffins. And then there is this stuff about a plague and rats and a solution that's actually a person. And a banished grandmother comes out of hiding. And Thomas isn't exactly what everyone thinks he is. And they have better access to their powers at their new location which isn't ever really explained. And even though their powers are stronger, they don't seem to have any control over them.
