About this deal

We held our heads high and planted lemon trees in acts of defiance, praying that when they came for us, it'd be a bullet to the head.' It didn’t matter that I was eighteen years old. It didn’t matter that my medical experience was confined to the words in my textbooks. All of that was remedied as the first body was laid out before me to be stitched up. Death is an excellent teacher.

Konflik bersenjata yang berkepanjangan, belum lagi banyak pihak luar yang terlibat dalam konflik ini membuat Suriah seperti medan perang yang tak berkesudahan. i felt everything while reading this, i felt all the difficult decisions they had to make, all the pain they had to endure, and all the love they gave each other. The story takes place in Homs, which was a purposeful decision on the part of Katouh. “Homs is known as the birthplace of the Syrian Revolution. I wanted to pay an homage to that city,” she says.Despite the book being aimed at young adults and teenagers, it weaves into its narrative actual events from the war alongside fictional elements, painting a somewhat representative depiction of the conflict.

It was sometimes hard to read, very emotional, and a vivid tale of modern warfare and its effects on innocent people. I greatly liked the main character, including the male protagonist and the supporting characters. I enjoyed seeing the author’s love for Syria through her characters’ eyes. I imagine Syria was a beautiful place filled with such fantastic culture before the war, and it will be again one day. It’s clear that Syrians have a strong sense of cultural identity and a love for their people.

As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow

In the last six months, I have participated in more surgeries than I can count and closed more eyes than I ever thought I would. It has the power to spark rebellions, to conquer cities, to break free of the chains that hold you. This book is soul-crashing and heart-shattering and it's so beautiful in its unique sadness that will grip you and make you live with the characters, taking breaths with them and rooting for their happiness while suffering their drama with each of your heartbeats. This is an important book. Everyone should read it' - Elizabeth Laird, award-winning author of Welcome to Nowhere
