About this deal

Another take would be to do away with Raspberry Pi entirely and repurpose an old computer to serve as NAS and a server for required services. It’s a valid path, full of saving opportunities but before going down this path, consider the running costs, especially the power consumption. Jan 6 13:41:29 CL01-Master udisksd[413]: failed to load module mdraid: libbd_mdraid.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Simultaneously we established a second SSH session and ran htop to monitor system status. The screenshot below was taken while close to the 5-minute mark (left is the htop real-time display, and right is the stress test output) Dividing the temp value on the right side by 1000 gave the CPU temperature. All 4 CPU cores reached 100% full load during the test, while the maximum temperature did not exceed 70°C. At this moment, there was no obvious heat sensation when touching the case. Typing ctrl-c to stop the stress test, and then executing the temperature measurement script again 1 I ran into a few different issues when formatting different sets of disks. For example, when I was trying to format four HDDs the first time, I got: mdadm: super1.x cannot open /dev/sdd1: Device or resource busy Now it's time to share that drive on your network, so you can add your files and access them from any device in the house. To do this, we need a tool called Samba, which is an open-source implementation of Windows' SMB/CIFS file-sharing protocol.

Once confirmed, we executed the following commands in the Raspberry Pi to update and upgrade the system: 1 Align and insert the 2x7-pin daughterboard to the GPIO port of the Raspberry Pi 4B and fix it with screws If you want your system to have a clean look, it may behoove you to get an enclosure that not just fits your Pi, but your drives as well. This will also help to organize the mess of wires and cables this project will create. Insert the SSD into the SATA III connector of X823, flip it to the other side, and fix it with screws. The Penta SATA HAT is powered by the JMB585 with 2 lanes 5Gbs PCIe buses with up to 10Gbps bandwidth. With 5 SSD attached in RAID0 mode, we can achieve up to 803MB/s speed. Raspberry Pi 4 Official Case: This case has the correct Raspberry Pi colors and aesthetic, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of features. With its over on, there’s no access to the GPIO pins or camera and there’s no hole or mount for a fan either. Large queue depth speeds up reads, especially for random accesses, but there is little impact on writes.

In your version of this, MyMedia would be the name of your share (name it whatever you want) and /media/pi/MyExternalDrive would be the mounted location of your drive. (You may need to open up the file manager and head to /media/pi/ to figure out what it's called.) The final Quit command will exit the Parted wizard. Obviously, you can adjust these commands to fit the name of your drive, the number and size of partitions you want to make on it, and so on—but for most basic users just starting out, these commands should work well. Best for: Touchscreen projects (i.e. Dashing, Smashing, Mycroft AI) 11. TFT Touchscreen Kuman 3.5-inch Display with Protective Case

To be fair, I wouldn’t be able to tell which NAS box I was using for my workflow as both performed to my satisfaction – and I was using my drives without any RAID configuration. Adding data stripping would definitely improve file access time. Conclusions That being said, for both SSDs and HDDs, the transfer speeds have been more than 900Mbit/s at 1MB sequential read and queue depth 8, close to the upper bandwidth limit of the Gigabit Ethernet interface. This read speed can support a single 1080p60 video stream at a frame rate of 60fps or 2 parallel 1080i50 video streams at a frame rate of 25fps, which is sufficient for home streaming services. In another media service test, the NAS system performs satisfactorily with three computers playing HD video on demand and one phone playing MP3 music without any lag. Project Summary These cover all the software needed for our NAS project, but they are not enough for a complete NAS system. We also need a preferred case, otherwise, the Raspberry Pi NAS will only run bare metal. Although there are many cases available in the market for Raspberry Pi 4B, as a NAS system we need a case kit that can accommodate at least 1-2 internal SSD/HDD and must also have a good heat dissipation design. The log shows a question is asked about the Plex media server list (plexmediaserver.list), just choose the default N. When we see "Installation successful", we know that the installation was successful. At this point, the Plex streaming service is up and running. Invoking the Nmap scan again from the macOS side, we find that TCP port 32400 for Plex service is open. 1

For both SSDs and HDDs, sequential reads/writes are significantly more efficient than random reads/writes.

Prepare Raspberry Pi 4B In my case, it took me about 1h extra to find a reasonable tutorial, follow the steps and understand how to map volumes correctly. I have learned a couple of new things in the process, but at the same time, chances are I’m likely to revisit the same tutorial next time as I don’t expect to use this knowledge any time soon. What one will take from this learning experience is entirely down to them. Among the easiest but most satisfying Raspberry Pi projects is a retro gaming console. There’s no shortage of means to accomplish this feat, from RetroPie to Recalbox or Lakka, and even a roll-your-own method. While Nintendo’s NES Classic Mini is a neat console, a Raspberry Pi offers greater functionality through additional emulators, more ROMs, and the ability to serve other purposes, such as doubling as an HTPC. However, the NES does come in an original Nintendo shell. With the Retroflag NESPi Case, you can transform your Pi into an NES Classic clone. Bonus points for working power and reset buttons. Additionally, the bottom of the console features a microSD card holder. However, note that the reset and power buttons simply cut the power, performing a hard shutdown. Therefore, you may consider properly shutting down your Raspberry Pi. Nevertheless, this is a fantastic case for the Pi that will let you game in style.
