About this deal

Something that was un-tamable, a nightmare, something that they had no control over…could this be a projection of hurt and suffering or is this what happens when people are given too much power?

Vermutlich können sich manche Kinder auch alleine damit beschäftigen und sich so ihre Gedanken machen. The narrative alone is a delight to read aloud but the combination of story with illustrations make this work remarkable. No spoilers, but it built tension wonderfully, and I enjoyed what happened to two of the children, as I think children's fiction can sometimes shy away from fully embracing the consequences of a characters actions. But as the children's ideas grow bolder, the power of their visions proves greater and more dangerous than they, or the gods, could ever have imagined. David Almond's mythological story about children pitching in when the gods got lazy after creation, offers plenty for everyone, youngest to oldest, to discuss. In my opinion Mouse Bird Snake Wolf is a precious gift to the world – a quick read but one you will never forget. The words and the Illustrations work in harmony with one another and cause this book to have an endearing, breathtaking quality to it – a story that is accessible for all…it’s something very special indeed. From the stunning cover art hinted at by the faux-die-cut jacket to a last glimpse of the louche and negligent gods and the wolf lurking in the darkness deep underground, a fascinating, provocative collaboration. Make sure to look into the author and subject of this one because it isn't for the average reader/family.

A powerful and thought-provoking text, illustrated in graphic novel-style, which will enable children to explore the beauty and dangers of nature as well as the importance of boundaries and self-restraint. Almond’s words and McKean’s artwork blend brilliantly to create a book that is like no other, the words and illustrations seem to dance with one another on the page, they have a fluidity about them that is enchanting, guiding the reader deeper within the story and giving Mouse Bird Snake Wolf its phenomenal power and in my opinion makes this a truly captivating and beautiful read. I like little Ben because he was very understandable about doing those things which were not good for him.

This was followed by The Boy Who Swam with Piranhas (2012) a children’s book illustrated by Oliver Jeffers, Mouse Bird Snake Wolf (2013) with illustrator Dave McKean, A Song for Ella Grey (2014) and The Tightrope Walker (2014), a novel for young adults, and The Colour of the Sun (2018). Mouse Bird Snake Wolf is one of the most beautifully constructed graphic novels I have ever had the opportunity to read.

You could say that this is Almond and McKean's most beautiful effort yet, but just know that beautiful has its own dark and wondrous meaning in their hands.David Almond was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1951 and grew up in the small mining town of Felling. Like all good fables, this one has multiple interpretive possibilities and moral resonances, in addition to being a compelling story in its own right. This has a good moral and will be a great lesson to those who think they can overpower others as well as a great read! It was awarded a Nestlé Smarties Book Prize (Silver Award) and was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal (2000) and for the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize.
