About this deal

What a wonderful escape! I absolutely loved the setting. A tiny little island that can only be accessed by the causeway at low tide, and gets submerged at high tide. This is a story about transformation and letting go. It is also a story about the strength of a community and connection with others. Jenny Colgan is a Scottish author who has lived all over Europe and the United States. A wife to her husband and a mother to three children, Jenny Colgan writes science fiction and romantic comedies. But then she lost the boyfriend and the business eventually went bankrupt. Polly was forced to leave the life she thought she loved so much in favor of a Cornish tidal town called Polbearne. Polly’s move was necessitated by the fact that the town was the only place she could afford to live. Cornwall is the setting of many gorgeous bakeries and cream tea establishments and we’re only sad to report that the beach street bakery is fictional. but its a good game to and try and find it. Amid the ruins of her latest relationship, Polly Waterford moves far away to the sleepy seaside resort of Polbearne, where she lives in a small, lonely flat above an abandoned shop.

Summer at Little Beach Street Bakery - Goodreads

After reading Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery, book three in the Little Beach Street Bakery series did I just have to read the first book because I found the one I read marvelous. After being on a spree of bad reads, this one broke the spell. What a delightful surprise. I had requested this book electronically from my library so long ago, I had actually forgotten about it. Now I know why it took so long. It's really good. A Christmas romance that revolves around two plotlines that deal with cheating. This entire book was a mess and painful to even wade through.I love the setting, I love the characters, but I was expecting a Christmas book. Christmas was not the focal point of the story. I have read two other books by Jenny Colgan with Christmas in the title, and Christmas played a prominent role in the story. If you’re looking for a Christmas story, which I was, this one was a disappointment. I suggest reading other books by her.

Little Beach Street Bakery: Review - Captivated Reading Little Beach Street Bakery: Review - Captivated Reading

In this novel, I enjoyed getting to know Polly who at the age of thirty-something has to find a new career when the graphic design business she started with her boyfriend goes bankrupt. With so few options at her disposal and rent being so expensive in town, she decides to take residence in a small beach town that seems to be inhabited by folks that are set in their ways. I think I just finally gave up during the wedding scene and as a Star Wars fan I have to say I would have run screaming from the church. What a delightful book. I've not read the two previous book about Polly Waterford adventure in Mount Polbearne, but I'm dying to do so. I was surprised to discover how serious the book theme was, sure there was a lot of funny moments, but the book also had a lot of serious things going, like Kerensa's BIG secret, or things concerning a person from Polly's past or rather her mother's past.Setting that aside, I was pleasantly surprised by Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery which, while the third book in a trilogy, was my first visit to Mount Polbearne. Jenny Colgan does a wonderful job of putting the reader right into this little Cornish community, a bit cut off from the mainland. When high tide rolls in, it can be dangerous crossing over to the village, water lapping at the tires of the vehicles who dare to cross. Mount Polbearne is a coastal village that prides itself in maintaining a more traditional feel, which means updates and modern additions aren't always welcome. Fascinating fact: Polbearne was actually based on the real-life island of St. Michael’s Mount. Which, just like it’s fictional counterpart, has a road that is only accessible at times of low tide. I can’t even imagine! The first book in the Little Beach Street Bakery series tells how Polly lost everything she cared about in life and then received something even more precious.

Sunrise by the Sea: Escape to the Cornish coast with this

And Mrs. Bradley was standing there with a face like fizz. She had one of those monobosoms . . . you never see those any more, do you? I suppose she wore a corset. They’re a dying breed . . . Polly was a realistic character: full of flaws, yet incredibly likeable and relatable. The rest of the characters reflected the town from where they came; unique, whimsical, and almost fairy tale in their quality. Beyond the window was...nothing. Just a stretch into outer space, or, as it revealed itself to be on closer examination, the sea. The picture had been taken on a day when the sea and the sky were the same shade of gray and blended into one another. It was a great big expanse on which nothing was written. Polly stared at the picture for a long time, fascinated. It looked exactly the way she felt: hollowed out, empty. But also strangely calming. Like it was all right that there was a lot of gray in the world; grey was how it was." As it is, what we end up with is that rare beast: a sequel that is actually better than its predecessor! I know; that hardly ever happens, right? Well, in this case, Jenny Colgan has not only managed to bottle the magic she captured in the first book but she's plugged it into the amp and turned it up to eleven. Polly and her husband run a graphic design business together that goes belly-up. Their marriage doesn't survive the stresses of declaring bankruptcy and Polly moves to a dilapidated flat in a small seaside town in Cornwall, as it is all she can afford (slightly hard to believe, knowing how much seafront property goes for in this country, but I'll let it slide).Tienes que buscar lo que te haga feliz. Es la única manera de vivir. Tienes que hacer lo que más te gusta. Cuando descubras qué te gusta hacer, hazlo con todas tus ganas…”

I really enjoy this series and am always eager to read more of Neil the puffin! Really lovely to catch up with the characters again too facing the newest challenges in their life. Little Beach Street Bakery was everything that I hoped it would be and more! There are a wonderful selection of characters to meet and get to know, and by the end of the book, all of the local people felt like my own personal neighbours and friends. I especially loved that they had their own individual voices and issues in their lives, and that some of these were explored too. And best of all? With her world finally coming down to a barely livable flat in a town she couldn’t have cared less about, Polly was certain that her life had all but ended. There was nothing else to strive for, no hope for the future.
