About this deal

A further study based out of Indonesia tested the mercury concentration of three different cockle species ( 9). Sorry I've not gone down the veggie route but I honestly think it will be too much for me, making such a big change like that.

Cockles are often thought of as being a kind of shellfish garnish, served alongside something like a pan-fried fillet of fish.Unfortunately, I DON'T have any plans for the cockles as I haven't got a darn clue what to do with them. Whether the claim of ownership is fair or not, one thing is for certain: once ready to eat, these pickled molluscs do not last very long at all in my home. Those wishing to collect more than this are deemed to be engaging in commercial fishing and are required to obtain a permit from the Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority.

Another proposed derivation is from the Latin for the ventricles of the heart, cochleae cordis, where the second word is an inflected form of cor, heart, while cochlea is the Latin for snail.

The folk song " Molly Malone" is also known as "Cockles and Mussels" because the title character's sale of the two foods is referred to in the song's refrain.

These days, Cockles are far less-fashionable, which is a great shame as they really do make the perfect beer snack. Cockles are a street food in Cambodia where it is usually steamed or boiled and served with a dipping sauce consisting of crushed peppercorns, salt and lime juice. The dog cockle is edible, but due to its toughness when cooked it is generally not eaten, although a process is being developed to solve this problem. Shaun Rankin's recipe for Cockles cooked in white wine with shallots, pancetta and basil demonstrates what a delight simply-cooked cockles can be. I've only ever eaten them when I was p*ssed but some pubs reaked of them and it was virtually impossible to kop off.
