A celebration of womanhood through short stories centered on women with a mix of historic, tale, and of course magic, voices. The one word I was perhaps surprised not to see featured was witch, which has been an incredibly harmful term to be flung at women over the centuries. The Furies: mythological snake-haired goddesses of vengeance, pursuers of those who have committed unavenged crimes.I’ve just mentioned a few of the highlights in this collection, but really it’s an exemplary anthology, full of riches. The book is Furies: Stories of the wicked, wild and untamed and it’s a worthy volume to mark 50 years of being in the vanguard of feminist publishing. It is, and I did love that Atwood, to be honest, the collection is worth it for just that one, though there were several others I also loved.

naturally, some of the kids don't even bother reading the plays, and the classes are pretty formless and frequently devolve into fighting or storming out. I have read many similar novels in the intervening years, and although I still like this book, it didn’t make the same impression on me second time around. I listened to the audiobook alongside reading the hardback and there were multiple narrators used throughout, which I very much appreciated. Of the eight books incoming in March this year I have now abandoned two and read and reviewed four, with one not reviewed on here yet, and one in the Reading With Emma pile.I enjoyed reading the novel greatly and it certainly fulfilled one of the author's intentions in that it made me want to go back and re-read those Greek tragedies. They track and kill those who’ve murdered and have escaped justice, killing them in as bloody a fashion as possible. The stories span all of history and some fantasy, from Biblical times to the early days of the Christian church, from an aquatic conference to World War II, and from 19th century Germany to a pandemic attic.

Smith’s rapist’s ex-wife says that the man once tied her to a chair and threatened to drown her, while another woman recounts that her ex-husband “stomped” on her head until she fainted. And if that were not enough, there’s the absolutely delicious introduction by the multi-hyphenated Sandi Toksvig, pointing out the many ways in which words are weaponised against women. Kā jau stāstu krājumā ar dažādām autorēm - daži stāsti man patika ļoti, daži - nu tā un daži - īsti nepatika. although alex is responsible for several different classes of various age groups throughout the course of her day, only one class is given any page-time: the one with the most troubled five students in the whole school. Collection of 15 short stories, ranging from sassy story college-like Siren on roles on seducing man, to a sex worker whose also a mum, a woman in Victorian era gotta gave up her independence just to get married, and a man who ran because his dead wife decided to haunt him because he forced her to get pregnant and she died.

not a bad thing at all, but if you are looking for The Secret History knockoffs like i always am, know that this is not the same kind of narrative arc. Some of the best bits, for me at least, are the fairly lengthy discussions Alex has with the kids about the dramas they've been reading (or, kids being kids, quite often not reading).
