About this deal

I had bought artist quality pencils which are amongst the most expensive on the market. However, as well as needing to know the colours and performance of the pencils, I also needed to organise them so I could use them efficiently and not have any wastage.

This post has shown you the differences between coloured pencil types, lightfast and non-lightfast coloured pencils. It has demonstrated when and why to use a particular type of coloured pencil, and this is illustrated in an example below. While the Caran d’Ache Pablo is a harder pencil than the Faber Castell Polychromos, the surface of the green capsicum above appears smooth. Which are the best oil-based colored pencils? The best oil-based colored pencils to use would be pencils that you find easy to work with, have rich color saturation, allow you to blend the colors together on your medium, and will give long-lasting color to your artwork. Country of Origin: UK | Product Options: Set of 12, 24, 36, 48, 72 | Safety: ASTM D-6901 and Blue Wool Scale ISO 105 Certification In the second example, I drew a green capsicum with the 76 set of the lightfast range of wax-based Caran d’Ache Luminance coloured pencils. (This range was expanded to 100 with an additional 24 colours in 2020. To see the whole range of 100 here.)

5. How to choose which colors will best suit your needs

These oil-based colored pencils are soft and lay down color wonderfully, which gives beautiful saturation to artwork. All of the different colors are water-resistant and smudge-proof, making them so much easier to work with. RESISTS BREAKAGE AND SMUDGING: Ideal for artists who want to achieve precise lines and details in their drawings. These Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor colored pencils are oil-based and come in a 12, 24, 36, and 72-piece set. Lyra makes its pencils in Germany and has been around for over two decades. One of the decisions you would need to make as an artist when choosing your colored pencils is whether to choose oil-based or waxed-based pencils. There are quite a few differences between the two, so understanding the differences will help you make a better choice. 1. Binder

Wax-based colored pencils are usually softer, and oil-based colored pencils are usually harder. This means that wax-based pencils can be layered and erased easily, and create a buttery surface that allows for blending and layering. However, the softness of wax-based colored pencils means that the core breaks easily. In looking at the colour wheel examples above, lightfast oil-based pencils provide a wide range of greens and blues. Oil-based pencils also have a different texture than the buttery wax-based pencils. If you’ve only been using wax-based colored pencils in the past, you definitely should try oil-based ones out. Are oil-based colored pencils better than wax-based?

EXTENSIVE COLLECTION: Includes 160 oil-based colored pencils with 12 metallic and skin-tone colors.
