About this deal

Micellar water is a gentle cleansing solution containing micelles, tiny balls of cleansing oil molecules, suspended in soft water. These micelles attract dirt, oil, and makeup, lifting them away from the skin. It provides effective cleansing without the need for rinsing or harsh scrubbing.

Used by me. I have used them all so I can give some personal insight, rather than just regurgitating marketing materials from the brands themselves (although all of the marketing is truly excellent, which is why I bought them in the first place!)Buying cruelty free isn’t hard these days. But I have genuinely struggled with micellar water. I hope this list gives you some good alternatives and you can wipe away makeup (and the rest) knowing no animals have been harmed in the process. How do we create this list? When shopping for this ingredient (and any ingredient, really, but especially this one!), please make sure you are looking at the INCI. I’ve had many people ask me if Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (aka Medium Chain Triglycerides) and/or Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside are the same ingredient as PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides. The answer is no—the INCIs don’t match. They’re similar because they’re from the same source material, but they’ve been processed differently and are not the same thing at all. Think of it a bit like corn: it can be transformed into all kinds of products like cornstarch, corn meal, and corn syrup, but none of those ingredients are interchangeable even though they’re all made from corn.

I’ve had good results using Sodium Lactate, Vegetable Glycerin, Propanediol 1,3, and/or sorbitol for the humectant part—on their own or blended. Just keep it adding up to 1% and you’re good to go. This supercharged micellar water effortlessly removes dirt and oil, cleansing skin at a micro-level to leave it thoroughly detoxed and renewed. Supercharged with hydrating and regenerating rose extracts, it boosts skins hydration levels by over 80%, leaving it perfectly clean, hydrated and refreshed without drying it out. As always, be aware that making substitutions will change the final product. While these swaps won’t break the recipe, you will get a different final product than I did. Although there are some common features (like the consistency and appearance of the two), micellar water is different from toner. In essence, micellar water acts as a cleanser, whereas toner is an additional step used after cleansing. Now, you can have plenty of fun with the hydrosol part! I’ve tried all kinds of different hydrosols, but tend to lean towards rose. Different hydrosols would work just as well, as would a blend. I found 15–20% to be more than fragrant enough (some of this micellar water leaked on my trip to Australia and my whole bag smelled of roses!), but you could use more if you prefer, reducing the amount of distilled water to compensate. I played with several different humectants as well, and settled on 0.5% each sodium lactate and vegetable glycerin. I found there is some more room to play in this category as long as you are keeping the total amount around 1%, so if you have a fancier humectant you enjoy that you’re itching to include, you likely could—though you may need to experiment to find what’s just right for you. For those experiments I’d recommend making smaller batches and using distilled water instead of a hydrosol to reduce waste. I certainly filled a lot bottles with similar smaller batches! Micellar waters remove makeup and cleanse the skin in one simple step, making it ideal for minimalists or people who don’t have time for a multi-step skincare regimen. That said, you can use micellar water as the first step in a double-cleanse routine—simply pour some out on a cotton pad, wipe the pad across your eyelids and face, and follow up with your cleanser of choice. To use micellar water, simply apply a few drops of the solution onto a cotton pad and gently apply to your skin. If you’re using a micellar water to remove any makeup or sunscreen, follow with your preferred cleanser. Otherwise, no need to rinse. As Dr. Yadav says, micellar waters fully cleanse your skin without making it feel squeaky clean or tight. According to the ISO 16128 standard, the remaining % contribute to the integrity and sensoriality of the formula
