About this deal

Ventilation is a tough one when it comes to time trials because the more closed off helmets are usually faster in the wind tunnel; however, if you overheat during your event, your body will hit the brakes on your max output. Lazer's Wasp Air Tri is something of ashape shifter. While designed to be fast, it also puts an emphasis on ventilation. With an optional longer tail and several different venting options, it's widely adaptable for changing conditions and different rider needs.

While I love the adjustability of the visor, the lens itself could use some help. The optics are not nearly as crisp as many of its rivals reviewed here. In particular, there are a few wavy spots near the nose cutout that could make looking down at your computer a bit off.In addition to a vent at the front of the helmet, on top is a hatch that Lazer calls the Aquaport. It’s designed to allow a rider to pour water over their head during extended efforts in high temperatures. While the feature adds weight to the helmet, if you run hot, it's probably worth its weight in gold. Since its launch, the Aerohead has been used to set the fastest average speed ever recorded atop Rohan Dennis at the 2015 Tour de France Prologue, the fastest stage time ever recorded atop Tom Bohli at the 2016 three days of west Flanders prologue, and the fastest team time trial in the history of the Tirreno Adriatico team time trial in 2016. Our Thoughts and stability. Using a patented design that suspends the helmet just slightly off the top of the skull, Roc Loc® 5 helmets. By creating helmet molds in up to 4 adult sizes to match the human body's form, our Super Fit sizes

Reduced weight and aerodynamics aren't the only design details to take into account when considering this helmet. With increased ventilation comparable to the higher-end model, the Aerohead MIPS TT helmet provides four Wind Tunnel vents that work homogeneously with internal channelling and the vented lens shield to provide a constant flow of cooling air. Proven to boost airflow without affecting aerodynamics, this system provides superior ventilation for when the heat starts to build up. Some helmets have removable plugs, while others allow for the visor to be removed, and some others have a hidey-hole for ice bags or ports for water poured over your head to filter through. Don't expect gale-force winds to pass through the shell though, even with the best-vented TT lids. Choosing the best time trial helmet for you will be determined primarily by your head positions and how long you're capable of 'turtling' over the course of an event. For those who are incredibly disciplined and their head stays perfectly still for the entirety of the TT, a helmet with a slightly longer tail should create less wind resistance — 'should' being the key word, as there is a myriad of other variables in a TT position that can affect drag. The helmets on test were worn for at least 200km each, as well as being subject to aerodynamic testing using a Notio aero unit to measure the CdA changes vs a baseline road helmet. There are two main components to a time trial helmet. These can be split broadly into speed related issues and practical ones. A time trial lid’s first function is to protect you, secondary to this is speed and then we have other issues like comfort, fogging, versatility and others.

Wrapping Up

custom tune fit tension and fore-aft tilt of the helmet in seconds using a single hand. Super Fit™ Engineering POC’s Cerebel is a huge departure from the company’s first go at a time-trial helmet, the Tempor. Not only is it much smaller, it’s also derived from an entirely different design philosophy. The Cerebel is meant to be fast in a wide variety of positions for a wide spectrum of riders. Again, I can’t confirm these claims, but with its rounded, bobtail shape, it’s easy to understand them. The POC might be wonderfully small, but it’s still comfortable with the shell standing off the ears nicely. Adjusting the rear dial mechanism is best done with the helmet off, but those with smaller hands may be able to reach inside the soft tail section to do so on the fly. Despite the minimal venting, Giro says the standard Aerohead MIPS is slightly better ventilated than the Selector, too. Unsurprisingly, the absence of external vents means the sleeker Aerohead Ultimate MIPS will be a fair bit warmer. Giro claims the new Aerohead MIPS and Aerohead Ultimate MIPS are measurably faster than its current Selector model. Photo: Giro. Additionally, the Aerohead isn't the coolest helmet in the lineup. The wraparound visor covers more of the face and this probably adds to the sensation of an already hot head. Faster helmets are going to be warmer. That’s just the deal,” said Giro’s Dain Zaffke. “It’s always a game of compromise and trying to find the right balance.”Pretty much every TT helmet on the market comes with some definition of an integrated visor — they are faster and eliminate eyewear incompatibility. Magnets attach some, others use clips, while others still are fixed in place.

Worn to good effect by Tom Dumoulin and his SunWeb teammates, the Rivet TT is an affordable aero option All Giro helmets are designed to reduce as much energy as possible while meeting and exceeding stringent safety The difference between the visor closed and open can make or break an effort on a hot day. It may be slower aerodynamically, but if it keeps you from overheating you're better off in the long, or short, run. The front comes with a magnetic clip-on visor, which is available in three colours and can be flipped if you want to keep them out of the way. However, this will cover the vents, which themselves are surprisingly useful given their diminutive size. Inside there's a gel pad to aid grip and comfort, and Met's Safe-T Orbital retention system provides a wraparound adjustment, four vertical positions and positions of occipital adjustment too. Additionally, the Aerohead isn’t the coolest helmet in the lineup. The wraparound visor covers more of the face and this probably adds to the sensation of an already hot head.

Our Thoughts

Giro will include a single mirrored grey eye shield with the standard Aerohead MIPS; the Aerohead Ultimate MIPS will also add an additional clear one, too, plus a custom molded EVA soft-shell case.
