In other words, the plot can be as ingenious as you like but, if I don't like the characters, I don't like the book. Margery & Clementine are fabulous. I adore them so much. They are hilarious, sweet, gutsy and adorable. The bond and love they have for each other, (and the representation), made my heart smile. This was my first time reading books by Hannah Hendy and I can’t wait to read the other books in the dinner lady detectives series. Those where I can't empathise with the main characters at all and I really can't read it to the end (and I hate not finishing a book);I loved seeing Seren stand up for herself finally. The side characters of the series all have plenty to bring to the dynamic. Highly recommended for those of you who want a break from all the doom, gloom and violence in many crime fiction books and who don't mind a bit of dark humour. Margery and Clementine are a hoot. They live in a small village in the English countryside and are Educational Centre Nourishment Consultants (aka Lunch Ladies) at the local school. They are partners, and sleuthing partners end up being their second “day job” as they attempt to get to the bottom of, what they feel, is a mysterious death of their less than perfect coworker, Caroline. As they stumble their way into an investigation, we can see a few twists, turns, and a true mystery unfold. I was surprised a few times, and really enjoyed how the story unfolds. Margery and Clementine are enjoying a peaceful life together in the small, idyllic town of Dewstow, and eagerly awaiting retirement (and the next episode of Antiques Roadshow). But their calm life is shattered when their kitchen manager is found dead. The police are adamant that it’s an open-and-shut case of accidental death. But Margery and Clementine are convinced there’s something far more nefarious going on, and they take it upon themselves to investigate. As they inch closer to the truth, it becomes clear that someone will stop at nothing to keep the pair quiet.

All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions. Margery and Clementine Butcher-Baker are coming to the end of another busy half term as dinner ladies at Summerview Secondary school. The school is abuzz with chatter about the upcoming break, the local harvest festival, and the fact that maths teacher, Mr Weaver, hasn't turned up to work in days. We also hear about minor characters such as "Mrs Melon" the Greengrocer and "Mrs Large" the small music teacher. It seemed like a game of Happy Families. Considering the two main ladies have the surnames Butcher and Baker, I think this was taken a little too far. Let's get one thing straight - there is only one Richard Osman and the opinion that this or that writer is not quite as good as him does not stop him/her from being vey good as well. Just because a writer is not #1 does not mean that he/her is not also very good. Margery and Clementine are dinner ladies, or to give them their official title 'Education Centre Nourishment Consultants' (really? is that what they're called now?!?!?!), and they are an absolute blast. Their relationship absolutely shines through from start to finish, it's beautiful and very authentic feeling.
Diaries & Calendars
The two dinner ladies, Clementine and Margery are a couple, but I was a long way into the book before I realised that they were supposed to have a romantic relationship, as there were no signs of that between them. They didn't even seem that compatible as Clementine never seemed to listen to Margery and dragged her unwillingly into all sorts of things. I was also disappointed that their detective work also never seemed to lead to any serious clues and it took a nudge from someone else before they found any useful evidence. All in all a bit disappointing. All in all, this is a brilliant cozy mystery and I can’t wait to see what happens next in the series! Finally, the solution was rather out of left field and came in an info dump near the end. All the clues that were followed were pointless, basically.

Both dark and hilarious which makes it the perfect read. Loved the diverse characters, unique storyline, gossips, drama and the suspense & mystery element. Also, loved the writing style - the setting and fast paced writing had me hooked throughout. It's near half term break and Halloween is just around the corner. Village life and Summerview School are again upended by the unfortunate death of a faculty member. It looked like a natural causes until a puncture would from a hypodermic syringe was found and murder was declared. Who would have wanted Mr. Weaver dead? What was the strange symbol found on the tree by his body? Who are the people dressed up in PE clothes, capes, and masks running around the village and meeting secretly in the school at night? Will the school canteen pass the upcoming health and safety inspection? And will Margery and Clementine Butcher-Baker be able to discover the truth?
